The next few days classes at Birminton passed by sort of smoothly. I wouldn't say that my life was back to "normal" just yet. In fact it was so far from normal that I even forgot what being invisible felt like. Maybe I even missed being invisible a little. Its weird how so many things changed during my second semester here. I was practically nonexistent last semester. I would take the train to college and study all the time, rush home right after classes, and help my mom with her chores and writing. Now, I have my own dorm room, I got drunk for the second time in my life, I joined a running team, and I'm the college headline. Sure, ever since the whole "Damon escorting me scene" things have soothed down a little. But apparently words travel fast around campus. News about me and Mike dating have gone viral. People look at me differently now. They recognize me. They are curious about who I am, and why one of the cutest quarterbacks was dating me, or why one of the coldest guys at Birminton helped me. Once again I found myself walking in the spotlight, uncomfortably, and being threatened by the chairman's daughter Olivia.
I barely saw Mike this week because he had no free time with practice, and had four consecutive classes. He kissed me on my cheek after my last class and told me he would text me tonight. I still couldn't believe that we were actually dating, and I think it's going to take me some time getting used to it. Nevertheless it's nice and warm, and I find myself fantasizing about our future dates together and our time as a couple.
"Aw it's pretty awesome how you fell for your best friend", Megan sighed, "I wish I had a story like this."
We were sitting in the locker rooms after a 20 minute trial race sweating and exhausted. Alex patted me on my shoulder as she passed us by. "Good job girls, especially you Zoe."
I nod smiling proudly, but as I turn around I lock eyes with that weird chick. The girl who always comes in first place. She was glaring at me AGAIN leaning on a locker from across the room. Despite her creepiness, I found it surprising how for a good runner, she was always alone.
Megan leaned down besides me on the bench, strapping on her clear gladiator sandals while Becky patted some sweat off of her forehead using her shirt.
"Hey guys?" I ask them catching the girl stare again.
I immediately turn away. Her constant death stare was starting to get on my nerves.
"What's up?", Megan looks up at me as Becky turns too.
It's funny how much Megan's English accent still sounded a little off since she lived most of her life in China. Her brown Asian eyes were very pretty and she had long silky black hair. Becky however always kept her black hair loose or braided, even during running practice. She says it keeps her ears warm.
"Um", I level my voice down as they both scoot in closer."Do you think I should go talk to her?"
"Who? stone faced girl with the green highlights?", Megan's eyes widen at my question.
"I mean she keeps staring at me", I whisper hesitantly, "Maybe I should confront her? Ask her if I did something wrong?"
"She's just jealous cause you're stealing her spotlight Zoe", Megan rolls her eyes.
"But still... I should maybe clear things up?"
Becky who had not said a word since, clears her throat. "I wouldn't do that if I were you."
We both look up at her from the bench. Her expression was serious and grim.
"There's a reason why that girl's always alone. That Daria Scott."
So her name was Daria.
"Why what happened?" Megan seemed so eager to find out. But I admit so was I.
