As they navigated the winding streets of Eldoria, the sounds of the festival faded into the distance, replaced by the distant hum of quiet conversations and the soft glow of lanterns lining the path. Lila walked beside Adrian, the weight of the pouch in his hands reminding her of the gravity of their mission.
They soon arrived at a secluded café tucked away in a corner of the city, a place known for its anonymity and warmth. The ambiance was cozy, with low wooden beams and rustic tables. A few patrons lingered over mugs of steaming drinks, and the smell of fresh pastries wafted through the air.
"This is a good spot," the thief said, glancing around cautiously before stepping inside. "No one will bother us here."
Adrian and Lila followed, finding a corner table that allowed them to keep an eye on the entrance. As they settled in, Lila couldn't help but feel a mixture of excitement and nervousness. They were about to help someone in need, but she could also sense the danger that lingered just beneath the surface.
"First things first," Adrian said, turning to the thief. "What's your name?"
"Jax," the thief replied, looking between them with guarded eyes. "And I appreciate you not dragging me to the guards."
"Let's focus on what you need," Lila said gently. "Tell us how we can help you and your family."
Jax hesitated, glancing around as if to ensure no one was listening. "We've been struggling for months. My wife fell ill, and with no money for medicine, I was desperate. I didn't want to steal, but I didn't know what else to do."
Adrian leaned forward, his expression serious. "We can help with that. If you tell us what medicine you need, I'll ensure you get it."
"And food," Jax added, his voice cracking slightly. "I have two young kids at home. They don't understand why we can't eat like we used to."
Lila's heart ached for him. "We'll get you food, and we can talk to the local merchants about a more sustainable way to help you."
Jax's eyes widened with a mix of disbelief and hope. "You really mean that?"
"Absolutely," Lila said, her voice firm. "This isn't just about today. We want to make sure you and your family can thrive."
"Lila, we need to be careful," Adrian interjected, his brow furrowing. "If we go to the merchants, we can't let them know about Jax's past. We have to approach this delicately."
"Agreed," Lila replied, turning back to Jax. "We'll find a way to get you the supplies without anyone realizing where they're coming from. But we need your help, too. We can't do this alone."
Jax nodded slowly, his expression softening. "I can help you talk to the merchants. They trust me, and I know who might be willing to donate or at least sell at a discount."
"Perfect," Adrian said, a glimmer of determination in his eyes. "Let's start with the medicine first. What exactly do you need?"
Jax took a deep breath and pulled a crumpled piece of parchment from his pocket, unfolding it with careful hands. "This is what I wrote down. It's for my wife. She has a fever that won't break."
Lila leaned in, studying the list. "We can find these at the apothecary. They're usually willing to help those in need, especially if we explain the situation."
"Let's head there now," Adrian said, glancing at the door. "The sooner we can secure the supplies, the better."
As they prepared to leave, Lila felt a surge of purpose. This was more than just a simple act of charity; it was a chance to make a real impact on someone's life, to show Jax that he wasn't alone.
