I walked home, my headphones snug in my ears, music drowning out the world. For once, I felt good. Today had been different—I'd talked to new people at school, and they seemed to actually like me. Maybe I'd made new friends.

When I reached our house, I unlocked the door and stepped inside. The place was quiet. Mom wasn't home yet, probably out running errands or at the mall. Shrugging, I made myself a sandwich, grabbed a glass of water, and plopped onto the couch.

Finally. No people, no socializing. Just peace.

Before I knew it, my eyelids grew heavy, and I drifted off—deep and dreamless.

"Sweetie? Hello? Baby... VALENCIA!"

The voice startled me awake. Groggy, I opened my eyes and saw Mom standing over me, looking soft but definitely irritated.

"What?" I mumbled, rubbing my eyes. "Why are you yelling?"

"I've been standing outside the door for ten minutes, ringing the bell!" she snapped.

It took me a moment to process what she was saying. Seriously? She was mad because I didn't wake up to open the door? For real?

"Ma', I was asleep. I didn't hear the bell. You should've just taken your keys with you," I said, my tone a little sharper than intended. I wasn't really thinking about the consequences.

"What now?" I muttered, trying not to sound too annoyed.

"Open the door," she commanded, arms crossed.

Confused, I unlocked the door and slowly pulled it open—only to see something I wasn't expecting.

"A BLOODY E-SCOOTER?!"

I froze, staring at it in disbelief. My brain struggled to process what I was seeing. After a second, I ran outside to get a closer look. The sleek black and silver frame practically gleamed in the afternoon light. Whipping around, I stared at Mom in shock.

"What... what does this mean?" I stammered, still in awe.

Mom's stern expression melted into a soft smile. She chuckled lightly, her voice warm.
"You've been asking for one, haven't you?"

I could feel my heart pounding. "I did... Oh my God, I love you!" I yelled, rushing back to hug her tightly. She laughed, wrapping her arms around me and gently rubbing my back.

"I love you too, sweetie," she said softly, holding me close. For a moment, I didn't want to let go.

"Now," she said, pulling back with a smile, "go take it for a spin."

I nodded eagerly, practically glowing with excitement. Grabbing the handlebars, I hopped on and took off down the street, the wind rushing past me and a huge grin plastered across my face.

Best. Day. Ever.

How's that? It keeps the ener
