4 years later…

“So? Did you get it?”

I walk down the street in the freezing December weather, my phone up to my ear. “Yes, Theo. I got it.”

“Great,” he says. “So you’re definitely gonna propose to her tonight?”

“Yup,” I answer, looking down at the small red velvet box in my other hand. “Definitely tonight. I have everything already planned out.”

“So she’s coming back from Florida today, right?”

“Mhmm. And I’ll be right at the airport waiting for her.”

“Wait. Put me on facetime. I wanna see the ring.”

“Okay. Okay.” I remove the phone from my ear and switch the call to FaceTime, seeing Theo’s face pop up in the small rectangle in the corner a few seconds later. I stop walking and open the box, switching the camera around.

“Wow. It’s beautiful,” Theo gushes. “Aliyah is gonna love it.”

“I hope she does,” I say, switching the camera back around to show my face. “Truth be told, I’m honestly really nervous about tonight.”

“Don’t be, Deion. You said you have everything planned out, right? So you have nothing to worry about,” Theo reassures. “Aliyah’s gonna say yes, and you two are gonna drive away into the sunset.”

“I’m still nervous, though,” I tell him. “I’ve only seen proposals happen in movies and tv shows, but this…this is the real deal.”

“It is, and I’m happy that you’re doing this. Just don’t freak out. Or fall when you get down on your knee. Or lose the ring. Or-”

I cut him off. “Theo, you’re not helping right now.”

“Ha. Sorry, D, but this is your first proposal, after all. You do want it to be perfect, right?”

I nod at him when a text notification from Kira pops up on my phone screen. I can see you

My phone chimes again with another notification. I’m coming up the street right now

I text her back with an “okay.” “Kira’s about to pull up to take me to the airport,” I tell Theo. “Wish me luck for tonight. I’m definitely gonna need it.”

“Good luck, Deion. I know everything is gonna go well for you,” Theo says before hanging up.

I slip my phone in the pocket of my coat just as Kira’s car comes into view. She rolls down the window, giving me a smile. “Hey, big bro. You better get in before you freeze your toes off.”

I go over and open the door, getting into the car. “Hello to you, too, little sis.”

Kira peers down at my hand and gasps. “Oh my god, you finally got it!”

I look down at the box in my hand. “Oh, yeah, I did.”

“Awww, Deion. Aliyah is gonna be so happy. When are you proposing?”

“Tonight,” I answered. “After the whole Christmas party with our family.”

“Ah, a private proposal. Very intimate.” Kira gasps again. “You have to let me help you plan it. Please?”

I think for a moment. “Well, I kinda already had everything planned out, but I guess I can use you just to make sure that everything is perfect.”

Kira pumps her fist in the air. “Yes! Thanks, Deion.”
