Thorne POV
I paced up and down my presidential suite in this five-star hotel, my mind racing. The opulence surrounding me did nothing to calm the storm brewing inside.
I couldn't understand why I had this reaction, why being near Lena had ignited something so fierce and uncontrollable. Her scent, her presence....it was intoxicating, almost unbearable. I had to leave the lounge, had to get away, or I knew I would lose control.
I could feel it....the hunger, the pull to drain her dry.
But I left. I left to keep her safe from me.
What the hell was wrong with me?
Why did I care about Adrian's mate all of a sudden?
This was supposed to be simple.
I should be using her to bring Adrian down, not protecting her from myself. Yet there I was, running away like a coward, instead of exploiting her vulnerability to my advantage.
I clenched my fists, anger surging through me. My body reacted to her in such a possessive way. It didn't make sense. I had centuries of control, discipline. But her? She was unraveling all of that in mere moments. I needed answers.
Without thinking, I picked up my phone and dialed the witch. She was the only one who might have an explanation for this... connection. The phone rang twice before her sultry voice answered on the other end.
"Yes?"
"What are you not telling me about Lena?" I practically growled, my voice filled with irritation and confusion. "Why am I so mesmerized by her after just one encounter? What the hell is happening?"
There was a pause on the line, just long enough to make my blood boil even more. I could hear her breathing, no doubt calculating her response.
"Ah, Lena..." she said slowly, almost teasing. "So you've felt it then?"
"Felt what?" I snapped. "I didn't call you to play games."
"The bond," she replied, her tone growing darker, more serious. "She is not just any human, Thorne. There's something in her blood, something ancient. You've already started to feel its pull, haven't you?"
I froze, my mind racing. A bond? With her? "That's impossible," I said, though my voice lacked the conviction I wanted it to have.
"Nothing's impossible," she replied, her voice like velvet. "Lena is special. Her fate was never meant to be simple. That's why she affects you, Thorne. And the deeper you go, the harder it will be to resist."
I tightened my grip on the phone, my jaw clenched. This wasn't part of the plan. Lena was supposed to be Adrian's problem, not mine. But the more I thought about her....her scent, her eyes, the way she seemed to pull me in.....the more I realized how entangled I was becoming. This wasn't something I could easily walk away from.
"You still don't understand, do you?" the witch purred, her voice sending a chill down my spine. "Lena isn't just any human. She comes from a bloodline that was thought to be eradicated centuries ago."
I gritted my teeth. "What are you talking about? Her blood... what makes it different?"
"Lena is a Descender," she revealed, her tone suddenly dark, almost reverent. "Her ancestors possessed blood so powerful, it could amplify a vampire's strength tenfold. Her kind was hunted, wiped out by our kind, because they made us stronger.....and more dangerous. Most of the Descenders were killed off in the Great Purge, their bloodlines erased. But it seems one slipped through the cracks."
