The fragile connection between Elara and Kael began to grow, though slowly and cautiously. Kael continued to keep his distance, but he no longer shut Elara out completely. They shared a few brief conversations—nothing too deep, but enough for Elara to sense that he was starting to trust her, if only a little.
One evening, as Elara wandered the quiet corridors of the palace, she found herself drawn to a part of the castle she had never explored before. The halls here were darker, more ominous, with ancient tapestries depicting battles between monsters and humans. As she turned a corner, she was startled to see Kael standing near a large, ornate door, deep in conversation with one of the Master's most trusted servants.
She ducked behind a pillar, not wanting to interrupt, but as she listened, her heart began to race.
"You must keep this from her," the servant whispered urgently. "If Elara finds out what the Master is planning, everything will fall apart."
Kael's voice was low and tense. "I know. But if she keeps asking questions, it won't be long before she uncovers the truth."
Elara's breath caught in her throat. What truth? What was the Master planning? She had always sensed that the Master harbored dark intentions toward her, but hearing Kael talk about it so openly made it real. Fear crept into her chest, but she forced herself to stay still and listen.
"The Master won't wait much longer," the servant continued. "He sees her as a threat, especially with how close she's getting to you. You need to keep your distance."
Kael was silent for a moment, and Elara felt a cold shiver down her spine. Had Kael been pretending to warm up to her, only to keep her distracted?
"I'm trying," Kael finally replied, his voice heavy with reluctance. "But it's not as easy as it sounds. She's... different."
The servant gave a sharp laugh. "Different or not, she's still human. And humans don't belong here."
Elara pressed her back against the stone wall, her mind racing. She had suspected the Master was dangerous, but now she knew for certain that he planned to get rid of her. Worse, Kael—who she had thought might be her ally—was involved in keeping secrets from her.
As the conversation ended and Kael began walking toward her direction, Elara slipped away, her heart pounding. She needed to act, but she wasn't sure what her next move should be. Could she confront Kael? Would he tell her the truth? Or had he already chosen loyalty to his uncle over the bond they had started to form?
In the safety of her room, Elara paced back and forth, trying to piece everything together. She couldn't shake the feeling that Kael was conflicted, but she also couldn't ignore the warning she had overheard. Whatever the Master's plan was, she had to find out before it was too late—and decide whether Kael was truly an enemy, or someone who might just help her survive.
