The crash is sudden and unexpected. I freeze for a second, unsure of what to do. I stand up out of reflex and wait, wait to hear something, wait for something to happen. But a second feels like an hour, I'm unsure of what to do.
I reach for the sharpest knife in the kitchen- it's a butchers knife that I never got around to cooking with and I hope this won't have to be my first time using it.I walk slowly, out of the kitchen and into the living room. I look up the stairs. It's dark and silent, I don't dare go up them.
Suddenly, I hear a door being closed, gently and slowly. Someone is there...I sneak into the laundry room and slightly close the door behind me, I crouch between the washing machine and a shelf. It's not the best hiding spot, if someone goes in the room they'll find me immediately, but in the heat of the moment this is the only place I can think of.
It's all silent, dead silent. I wait in the dark, holding my breath in anticipation. I clutch the knife as my palms begin to get sweaty. My heart is beating 1000 beats per minute, i can feel myself slightly shaking. I should've ran out to my car and gotten the hell out of there. Or at least have bought a gun or a pistol or something. What would I even do with that stupid knife? Chop off the fingers of the intruder?
Suddenly a creek coming from the stairs breaks the eerie silence. My thoughts go blank. Suddenly a rush of adrenaline hits me. I clutch the knife, my fight or flight instinct kicks in and I'm faced with a choice-
Gut that motherfucker in self defence or make a run for it....I can faintly hear the sound of heavy combat boots going around the first floor, then they grow closer, and closer...
The door opens, and the light is turned on. It begins to flicker violently, blinding me and the intruder."Jesus- what the fuck!"
A male voice shrieks. The light is turned off almost right away and the intruder leaves the room, the sound of the boots growing further away.I thank the gods, I thank the stars, but most of all I thank my procrastination habit when it comes to household appliances. I breathe a sigh of relief. it's quiet, but in the silence of the room it feels like I recreated the decibels of a thousand elephants jumping up and down.
I hear the front door opening and closing, but still I don't dare make a sound or leave my hiding spot.
I decide to wait a little longer, but soon I hear a female voice shouting and heavy knocking:
"Police! Open up!"
Confused, I slowly get up and leave the room. The entire first floor is covered in muddy footsteps, what a bastard!
I go to the door, but don't open it right away. I look out of the peephole and I see two officers standing out front. I open the door immediately and they enter. The male guard pushes past me, holding his gun in the air and walking around slowly."Are you alright, ma'am?"
The female cop asked me and she takes me to their car."Yes, I'm fine"
I say out of breath, still holding tight to my knife."What did you see or hear?"
She asked me, reaching to take the knife from my hand"I- I was in the kitchen when I heard this, this loud crash from upstairs and I- I didn't know what to do so I took a knife I hid."
The cop nodded, but then i suddenly realised. I didn't turn off the oven...
"I didnt turn the oven off!"
I tell the officer"Jim, first floor oven is on, turn it off when you leave. Over."
She says into her walkie talkie"Right. No sign of an intruder. Coming out. Over"
The male officer responds. After the search comes clean they sit me down and ask me some more questions. But one thing doesn't make any sense... who called the police? The officers couldn't give me an answer, apart from the fact that it was a male caller. Their theory is that a neighbour decided to come to my rescue, but that doesn't sit right with me. This whole situation doesn't sit right with me. First I see a white-Freddy-Kruger-animal hybrid and not even a full day later someone breaks into my house and the police are mysteriously called?
The officers leave at around 12AM, they instruct me to lock all of my doors and windows, keep my phone within arms reach and call if I sense any danger. The typical cop lecture basically.
I sit in my kitchen, eating the cold pizza. What does a person do in this situation? Do I just leave and go home like a sore loser? What would I tell my friends and family? Do I even tell them?
All these questions are causing me to spiral. The fear of not knowing what happens next terrifies me. The fact that I have to go through this all alone terrifies me. What if something horrible happens to me? How long would it take for anybody to find out?
I rest my face in the palms of my hands. I feel so
hopeless.I try to fall asleep after that, but to no avail. I toss and I turn, I keep my desk lamp on like a little kid who's afraid of the dark. I'm not a little kid however, but I am scared of the dark, I wasn't always scared of the dark.
I figure there's nothing better for me to do so I hop on my laptop to put on a comfort movie. When I turn it on I'm met with my last opened tab- Reddit.
I see that I have a 1 on top of my messages icon. I click it. I see that it's from the account I messaged from the humanoid encounters subreddit.
All it said was:
"May God be with you"
