LARK

"You don't have to wait outside, Doctor Reid," I laugh as I step inside my dressing room.

"Don't you have to... change?" Spencer asks, still lingering by the door, gripping his bag so hard his fingers are turning white.

He keeps glancing over his shoulder, but Blythe and his friend Penelope have long since disappeared, hunting for one of the security guys so Penelope can get his number.

I turn around and stare at him in all of his nervousness. He kind of reminds me of a bird— twitchy, constantly on alert and ready to take off at any minute.

He said he wasn't afraid of me, but that was definitely a lie.

I just can't tell if he likes me or not.

"You don't have to call me Doctor," he announces.

"What?"

"You called me Doctor." He clears his throat. "You don't have to do that."

"Okay, I won't call you Doctor if you come in here." He goes to speak and I close the gap between us, grasping his tie. "And I have a place to change in private, so don't freak out, okay?"

His throat bobs, and those big puppy dog eyes make me melt.

I bet he whimpers in bed.

I bet he fucks like he's begging for it.

I pull him inside and shut the door, heading right for my jeans, sneakers, and black hoodie that Blythe neatly folded and set aside for me after the rehearsal. The second I scoop them up, Spencer turns his entire body away from me, facing the wall.

It's really hard not to laugh.

Actually, it's impossible.

Spencer is... bizarre.

But that's not a bad thing.

I like his weird ties and the fact that he dresses like a chartered accountant from the '60s.

I like his glasses and the deep side part in his hair.

He was the first person I was drawn to at that meeting because he has this warmth about him. When you're in this industry long enough, you learn to read people. It's almost like a party trick. I can scan a room and tell you exactly who to avoid within a matter of seconds.

"Spencer? I'm changing behind the partition." I point to a giant black and white room divider in the corner. "You don't have to stand in the corner like you're in the Blair Witch Project."
