ATLAS

All Atlas really liked about school was art.

Art time was special to him.

While it seemed like just a fun activity to others, Atlas saw it as more.

Something about using his favorite brush to stroke color onto the canvas
Or maybe the fact that he had the freedom to draw whatever he wanted, without rules.

Creativity, he thought.
Aunt Quinn always said he had that.

As Atlas painted, he began thinking about how much he missed his aunt.

That's when he felt someone staring at him. He usually ignored the stares, but this time, it felt different.

Atlas paused, setting down his brush, and looked up from his ocean painting.
A pretty blue, he thought.
Across the room, Kian Vesper was staring right at him.

Atlas knew a lot about Kian.
Mostly the rumors, and how everyone liked him so much.
Kian was that popular kid, the complete opposite of Atlas.

Atlas glanced back at his painting of the ocean, then immediately back to Kian.
Kian had blue eyes. A really pretty blue.
They didn't even match his unusually black hair.
How could someone have light blue eyes and black hair?

KIAN

Kian watched the kid next to him dip all five fingers into a mix of colors that turned into some awful shade of brown.
Disgusting, he thought, frowning.

Art wasn't really his thing.
His eyes wandered from the mess in front of him to Atlas across the room.
Maybe he could ask Ms. Hailey to switch seats so he could sit closer to him.

He wanted to see what Atlas was painting. From this far away, though, he couldn't, and he huffed in frustration.
Then, surprisingly, Atlas looked up from his canvas. He glanced back down, then up again, his face curious.

Kian wanted to know what he was thinking.
Hopefully, about him.

Atlas smiled very slightly before turning his attention back to his painting.
He's so cute, Kian thought.

He glanced at the clock
Five minutes left.
Ms. Hailey didn't grade art, thankfully, so he spent the rest of the time staring at Atlas.

More beautiful than a canvas.

A minute later, Ms. Hailey came over and asked why Kian wasn't painting.

Kian said something about how much more interesting Atlas was than painting.
And much more beautiful than a canvas.

The teacher just smiled to herself and walked away.
