Sophia had been living at the Whitford estate for only a few days, but it already felt like an eternity. The sprawling mansion had become a gilded cage, suffocating her with its grandeur and the constant weight of her grief. Yet amid the suffocation, there was one person who made her feel...different. Liam Whitford.

Liam wasn't like the others. Where James was calm, composed, and ever the gentleman, Liam was raw, unpredictable, a storm waiting to break. He seemed perpetually restless, his dark eyes always scanning the room as though he was searching for an escape. But lately, those eyes had often landed on her, watching her with a mix of curiosity and something deeper—something she couldn't quite place.

Liam himself couldn't explain it. He had always been the reckless one, the younger son no one expected much from. But ever since Sophia arrived, something had changed. He found himself watching her more than he should, noticing the small details about her—the way her fingers absentmindedly twisted a loose strand of her dark hair, the quiet sadness that lingered in her eyes even when she smiled politely at Evelyn's attempts to comfort her. It unnerved him how quickly she had become a presence in his life, a constant pull that he didn't quite understand.

And then, that afternoon happened.

Sophia had ventured out into the estate's gardens, needing a breath of fresh air, a moment to herself. The late autumn chill nipped at her, and the sky above threatened rain. As she walked further from the house, she became aware of something—someone—following her. Her heart quickened as the soft sound of footsteps seemed to echo her own. She spun around, her pulse thudding in her ears, but saw nothing. Perhaps it was just her nerves, but she couldn't shake the feeling. The tragedy of losing her parents had left her raw, and now, being alone in this vast estate, every shadow seemed like a threat.

Her breath hitched as the sound came again, closer this time. Panic surged, her body tensing. Before she could stop herself, she bolted toward the house, the need to feel safe overwhelming her. The door was in sight, and just as she reached it, she collided with something solid—someone. Liam.

The force of the impact sent her stumbling forward, but his hands caught her instantly, steadying her against his chest. For a moment, neither of them moved. Sophia's heart pounded in her chest, and the world around them seemed to freeze. She clung to him, her hands gripping his jacket, her face pressed against his chest, breathing in the scent of leather, musk, and something uniquely him.

Liam felt it too—the way her body melted into his, the warmth radiating from her skin despite the cool air. Her small frame was so close, so fragile against him, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Liam didn't feel reckless. He felt protective. His arms wrapped tighter around her, his body instinctively shielding her from whatever had frightened her. But there was more to it. He could feel the soft curves of her body pressed against him, the warmth of her breath against his neck. The moment was simple, but it ignited something fierce in him, something he hadn't expected.

Her scent—soft, floral, and intoxicating—filled his senses, and for a second, he thought he could finally breathe again. His heart raced in a way that had nothing to do with fear. He noticed everything in that instant—the way her dark hair brushed against his jaw, the way her lips were so close to his collarbone, the way her body fit against his as if it were meant to. His fingers grazed her back, feeling the gentle rise and fall of her breath, and in that moment, Liam knew that something had irrevocably changed.

Sophia, too, felt it. Her fear ebbed away as she stood there, enveloped by his warmth, his strength. She had expected indifference from him—after all, Liam was the carefree, distant brother. But now, she could feel the rapid beat of his heart beneath her palms, the protective grip of his hands on her back, and it made her feel safe in a way she hadn't expected. She pulled back slightly, her face tilting up to meet his gaze.

Their eyes locked, and the tension that had been simmering between them since her arrival finally broke through. For a long, breathless moment, neither of them spoke. Liam's gaze dropped to her lips for the briefest of seconds before he pulled away, breaking the spell.

"You okay?" he asked, his voice a little hoarser than usual.

Sophia nodded, her voice too shaky to trust. "Yeah...I just... I thought someone was following me."

Liam's expression darkened. His protectiveness flared up instantly, a possessive instinct he hadn't known he was capable of. "Who?" His voice was sharp, demanding.

"I—I don't know. I just heard something. It was probably nothing."

But Liam wasn't satisfied with that. He glanced around the grounds, his jaw clenched. "Stay here," he said, already moving toward the door. He disappeared for a few moments, scanning the area, making sure no one was lurking around. When he returned, his expression had softened slightly, but the protectiveness in his eyes remained. "It's all clear. But if you ever feel unsafe, you come to me, got it?"

Sophia blinked, caught off guard by the intensity of his words. "I... thank you, Liam. Really."

He just nodded, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like he had a purpose, something to protect.

That night, the tension between them lingered, thick and unspoken. At dinner, they sat across from each other, and though neither of them said a word, their stolen glances told a different story. Liam couldn't stop watching her, couldn't stop wondering what had happened in that moment they had shared. The way her cheeks flushed when their eyes met only deepened his confusion, stirring something he couldn't yet name.

Sophia, for her part, felt her pulse quicken every time she caught him looking at her. The air was charged between them, a quiet intensity that neither of them knew how to navigate. Liam's protectiveness surfaced again when, during the meal, James casually mentioned something about Sophia taking a walk in the gardens.

"You should be careful walking around alone," Liam interrupted, his tone casual but with an underlying edge. "Never know who might be hanging around the estate."

Sophia glanced at him, confused by his sudden change in tone. James raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by his brother's comment, but said nothing. Evelyn, oblivious to the tension between them, continued chatting away, leaving Sophia and Liam locked in a silent, charged exchange.

And as the night wore on, they both realized—though they would never admit it—that something had shifted between them. Something neither of them could understand, but neither could ignore.
