Maya adjusted her apron with quick movements, preparing to face the busy night at the small restaurant where she worked. Throughout the day, her mind drifted, contemplating her increasingly heavy circumstances. Every evening, she walked home through the bustling streets of this metropolitan city, witnessing the towering skyscrapers, luxury cars whizzing by, and people caught up in their fast-paced lives. To her, all of that felt like a distant dream, just out of reach. Each step toward home weighed heavily on her, as if she were carrying the world's burdens on her shoulders.
At home, things were getting worse. Her mother, who had been ill for some time, could no longer get out of bed. Every time Maya heard her mother’s painful cough, her heart felt like it was being torn apart. The medications prescribed by the doctor only offered slight relief, and the cost of treatment continued to skyrocket. With her meager salary as a waitress, Maya knew she could never save her mother. Meanwhile, her younger brother had just been accepted into junior high, but Maya doubted she could continue to afford his education.
That night, after working more than ten hours, Maya sat on a wooden bench behind the restaurant to catch her breath. Sweat dripped down her forehead, and exhaustion was evident on her face. “I don’t know how much longer I can hold on,” she whispered to herself, staring blankly down the street. She felt trapped in a never-ending cycle of poverty.
“Looking gloomy again, May?” a voice interrupted her thoughts. It was Mira, her older and more experienced colleague, who often took notice of Maya's quiet demeanor. Mira approached and sat beside her, offering a cigarette. “Life is tough, but there are ways to change it if you know how to play the game.”
Maya glanced at Mira, then forced a smile. “I’m just thinking about my mom. She’s getting worse, and I need to find a way to pay for her medicine,” she replied, stealing a glance at the table where her mother used to sit when she was healthy.
Mira nodded sympathetically. “You know, life doesn’t have to be like this. There’s a way out if you’re willing to look for it.”
Maya looked at Mira, her eyes filled with curiosity and a hint of fear. “What do you mean? What can I do?”
Mira lowered her voice, glancing around to make sure no one was listening. “There’s a way to make quick money. But… it’s not an ordinary job.” She cast a cautious look before continuing. “You could be an escort for wealthy men. They pay big bucks just for some company.”
Maya fell silent, her heart racing. “What do you mean? Are you serious?” she felt torn between intrigue and horror at the proposition.
Mira stared at her seriously, then smiled slightly. “Listen, Maya. This might sound bad, but many women do this and end up living better lives. They can afford their kids’ education, buy homes, and live decently. You have the charm and beauty to succeed.”
“I don’t know, Mira,” Maya replied hesitantly. “I don’t want to sacrifice myself for money. This all sounds wrong.”
Mira leaned closer, placing a hand on Maya’s shoulder. “I get it, but think about your family. Your mom needs money for treatment, and your brother needs an education. With this, you could help them and change your life. No one out there cares about the past; they just want happiness in the moment.”
Maya lowered her head, contemplating Mira’s words. Inside her, a part of her yearned to improve their situation, but the price felt too steep. “I’ll think about it,” she finally said, trying to suppress the growing unease within her.
Mira smiled, feeling she had planted the seed of interest in Maya. “Stay positive, May. Who knows, this could be the best opportunity you’ve ever had.”
Maya nodded slowly, but deep down, a mix of emotions swirled within her. That night, she realized her life was about to change, and the decision she faced would determine her path in the future.
