Phantom Falls was a quaint small town in Minnesota that harbored a little over three thousand people from all ages. Even though most of their young adults had left to colleges in nearby cities.
In the middle of the most populated side of town was built a quiet neighborhood where the Jung family resided, although family may have been too big a word for it. For the past four years, the Jung household consisted of Mr. Jung and his only son, Wooyoung. Said boy was a month shy of his eighteenth birthday but had only been thirteen years old when his mother had passed away in a car accident on her way back from work. At the time of the accident Mr. Jung had been inconsolable, his only reason to live being his young son that had since raised to the task of taking care of his father and helping around the house as best he could. Mr. Jung was the only realtor in town which had allowed the two to live fairly comfortably and given them time to grieve in peace which in turn had led to the father and son's blossoming relationship in face of the tragic event.
Wooyoung had since then grown into a kind, mischievous, respectable young man. Well, for the most part. In all his years living at Phantom Falls, the ravenette had developed a strong bond with the incredibly naïve kid that lived down the street from him, a boy named Kang Yeosang. They had always been a chaotic duo with Wooyoung often getting his best friend into trouble but lucky for them, Mr. Jung was always there to soften the blow with the other's parents whenever they failed to get out of said trouble by themselves.
It wasn't until a few years ago that the duo morphed into a trio. After Wooyoung's passing, the boy had a hard time at school which was when a special student tutor had been appointed to him to help the boy get back on track and stay within his generation of students at school. The tutor, Park Seonghwa, was a student two years older than Wooyoung and in time had turned into an ally and then a friend, for both Wooyoung and Yeosang.
The date on today's calendar showed October 31's, Halloween, and Wooyoung felt incredibly bummed out that he currently had no plans for the weariest night of the year.
"You know, I find it hard to believe that you haven't asked me for permission to stay out tonight or even have your friends over" Mr. Jung noted, taking off coat and gloves.
It was three o'clock in the afternoon and he had just gotten back from a visit to one of his clients.
"I told you, I don't have plans for tonight" Wooyoung slumped on the beige velvet couch. "At least not yet" he muttered and looked up to see his father looking at him.
"I'm still pretty sure this is all just a prank or something" he said with a cocked eyebrow and a smile, but his son rolled his eyes and shook his head. "This is Halloween, you love Halloween, Woo"
Mr. Jung opened his arms wide, pointing all around him. Every window of the house was decorated with either spiders, or spider webs or painted symbols. The stoop was crawling with carved pumpkin and jack o lanterns, every corner of the house had a creepy night creature coming out of it and even the lawn had turned into the night of the living dead with tomb balloons that read "RIP".
"But I've already done it all, Dad" Wooyoung sighed as his dad sat down next to him. "I did the scary sleepovers with Yeosang every year when we were kids. I scared him with my own fake murder, I haunted his house one year too when his parents weren't home, I did the creepy walk through the cemetery with Seonghwa dressed as a revenant last year. There's just nothing left to do" he whined.
"Well, I know one person who must be happy you haven't made plans for him yet" Mr. Jung said making his son snicker.
"Yeosang's not always the target..." he mumbled with a smirk. "The first Halloween after mom died, I had just begun hanging out with Seonghwa outside of school so he wasn't aware of my affection for the holiday yet, right? So, I called him to the school claiming I was having a nervous breakdown and then I locked him in there and proceeded to walk by the classroom with a knife only so he could see my shadow. After that, I carefully unlocked the door and chased him around" the boy paused in between laughs. "Poor guy almost had a heart attack, but then again he did punch me in the stomach too"
"Serves you well" Mr. Jung said, rolling his eyes. "So, if even your mother's passing wasn't enough to make you forget about Halloween, how come you're not doing anything this year? It doesn't have to be grandiose every time"
Wooyoung pouted. "I guess. Anyway, how was your meeting with old Mr. Jeon?"
"It went fine, we agreed on prices for the mansion and other details like that so that I can start writing up the house profile and then post it on my website" Mr. Jung got up, tidying up the living room that had been invaded with festive decorations. "It's a shame he's selling Ravenwood Manor. It's been in his family for generations"
"Well, that kind of got cut short. With his daughter getting killed and all..."
Mr. Jung looked down in disheartenment. "Yeah, I guess it was". A silence settled between the two who understood the pain of death all too well. "Anyways, I'm glad we finished today. He told me he was leaving later in the afternoon, that he couldn't bare to stay in the mansion alone any longer. Especially not on a night like tonight"
"It's a shame. I remember how much I loved to go trick or treating at Ravenwood when I was a kid. The manor looked like a haunted castle and Mr. Jeon always put extra effort into the decoration..."
"I know" Mr. Jung offered his son a gentle smile before going upstairs to wash up and change.
For a while Wooyoung stayed on the couch, playing on his phone until an idea settle inside his mind. An amazing idea for tonight. Getting up, he shouted at his dad that he was meeting up with Yeosang and left his house.
His friend lived down the street and two minutes later, the ravenette was knocking on his door.
"Hello Ms. Kang! Is Yeosang home?" he asked.
"Wooyoung, sweetheart. It's been hours since I last saw you" she said with a smile, ushering the boy inside. "Yeosangie is in his bedroom, like always when he's not with you"
"Thanks, Ms. K." Wooyoung ran up the stairs, bursting into the room. "I've got plans for tonight" he said, plumping onto the bed.
"Nope, no way I'm hanging out with you tonight. It may have taken me ten years to figure out, but I know you always have a mean prank lined up for me!" the blonde got up, furiously shaking his head.
Wooyoung had cracked a smile as soon as his friend had gotten up and started rambling. "Don't worry, this time it's gonna be a scary experience for both of us"
Yeosang cocked a questioning eyebrow. "How so?"
"Well, my dad told me old Mr. Jeon is leaving town today which means that Ravenwood Manor will be empty tonight-"
"Nooooooooooooo. That's breaking and entering, you idiot"
"My dad's got a key!" Wooyoung grabbed his friend's wrist. "We can take some flashlights and candy and go explore! It's a huge manor, with a lot of secret rooms and all, come on!" he pleaded.
"No way, I'm not spending the scariest day of the year in a manor and then in jail" Yeosang got out of his friend's grip, stepping away to sit back on his bed, taking out his phone.
Wooyoung could see his friend was standing his ground and he knew nothing he could say would convince him. But that didn't mean someone else couldn't. Smirking, the ravenette left the house, he needed to get to Phantom Falls General Hospital where dear Park Seonghwa shadowed his dad, Doctor Park, Phantom Falls' general surgeon.
