I hated myself even more at this moment because I was the reason why my mate was crying, which made me wonder if I should even stick around.

Chapter Twenty One- The Journal

Riley's POV

"It was like I was watching Adam die all over again. It wasn't just a simple dream. It was a nightmare," I explained to Sam.

"And what happened after the dream?" He asked, his eyes staring into mine but I briefly broke our eye contact as I glanced at my blushing mate.

"They broke a mirror," Ryder grumbled from across the room as he spun around in his chair. Noah chuckled slightly before returning to write unknown words on his paper. "We've broken a few things in our day too, Noah. Remember the-" But Noah cut him off, his hands now clasped over his mate's mouth as he blushed like crazy.

Annoyed, the elder returned his attention back to me. "Has your mark cleared up yet?" he asked. Sighing, I pulled down the collar of my shirt, allowing him to see my two perfectly normal mating bites. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Danny tensing up as his teeth bit into his bottom lip.

With a confused expression, Sam looked closer as if he could see something I could not and all too sudden, his finger poked one of the bites, causing me to jump in my seat and nearly fall off. "Was that Danny's bite?" he asked, calmly. Flustered, I shook my head, my hand rubbing my shoulder. "Well I have good news and bad news."

"What's the bad news?" Ryder asked.

"Adam is not dead but you probably already knew that." Sam paused to look at me. "His essence is still within you and in order to part from him and not die, he needs to remove it himself."

"But I thought that was impossible," Danny said in a low voice, his eyes huge from either fright or shock.

"This is a demon we're talking about, a powerful one in fact." Sam paused again, his hand rubbing his chin as he stared thoughtfully at the ground. "You need to talk to him, Riley. Get him to remove it or you're going to be dead in a few weeks. His physical death may have bought you some time but there's only a matter of time before he forms a new one."

"That son of a bitch just won't die," Ryder stated.

"He is one of the most powerful demons and he is a shadow, which means he can inhabit other bodies."

"What about his sister?" Noah asked as he finally focused on the conversation.

"You said she had the ability to manipulate and create her own fire, correct?"

"She could also turn into smoke or something. It was scary," Danny added as he pulled his legs closer to his chest. I draped my arm around his shoulders, hoping to comfort him but he only shrugged me off, his eyes cast downwards in order to hide his emotions. I decided to leave him alone.

"Her situation is the same as her brothers. Her body needs time to reform itself. Demons are spirits. Killing them would take more effort than simply ripping their throats out." The room fell silent after that. I hated the feeling that something big was about to happen very soon and it was mostly my fault.

"Thank you for talking with us, Sam." Ryder stated before he rose to his feet to shake hands with the Elder. Sam simply nodded before returning his attention back to me.
