It was early Wednesday morning at "The Same As It Never Was ANTIQUES," where Melinda Gordon and her partner Andrea Marino were busy unpacking boxes for the shop."We really should plan a vacation soon to take a break from all this," Andrea suggested, placing a box on the counter.
Melinda, her expression scrunched in confusion, joined Andrea, setting another box beside her. "What? I thought you loved this place," she said, hands on her hips.
"I do love it—waking up early, lifting heavy boxes, and dealing with cranky customers," Andrea replied sarcastically.
Melinda's face went blank, momentarily stunned by Andrea's comment. Sensing the tension, Andrea quickly added, "I'm just joking! I'm just saying I'd love to travel a bit with my best friend."
Melinda's expression softened into a smile. "I would love that too! We should definitely look into it; it would be nice to have some time just for us girls."
Andrea beamed back at her as they returned to their work. Just then, the door chimed open, and Melinda noticed a young man, around 19, walk in, accompanied by a little girl who looked to be only about ten.
"Hey, how can we help you?" Andrea greeted them.
"Uh... hey... um, I just wanted to look around... if that's okay," the boy replied sheepishly, a small smile on his face.
"Of course, that's no problem," Melinda said warmly, returning the boy's smile as he began to browse the shop. Meanwhile, she noticed the little girl lingering near the counter.
Feeling Melinda's gaze upon her, the girl turned with wide eyes, meeting Melinda's stare. Melinda quickly looked away, attempting to ignore her; however, the little girl broke the silence with the four words Melinda recognized all too well.
"Can you see me?"
