I gently pushed open the main gate of our house, the creaking sound of iron filling the quiet air. My earbuds were in and Paniyon Sa was playing softly. This song is an all-time favourite of mine, the way it captures love so beautifully. I can never get enough of it. Sometimes, I imagine the day when I'll have a boyfriend and we'll listen to this song together, sharing the moment.

A bright smile lit up my face, as if reflecting the stars themselves. And why not? My favourite song was playing, wrapping me in its melody. As the music filled the air, I found myself lost in another one of my daydreams, a sweet, romantic moment. A girl running away playfully, her laughter echoing as a boy chased her through the winding paths of a grand royal fort. She kept glancing back at him, her eyes sparkling with joy, while his smile grew wider, captivated by the sight of her.

I giggled to myself, amused by my imagination. I never put myself in these little scenarios, they're always about faceless strangers, dancing through the stories in my mind. And yet, here I was, blushing and giggling at my own creation.

I pushed the door open cautiously, my steps light, but the atmosphere inside hit me like a wave. The room was filled with silence. Sensing the tension, I quickly paused the song on my phone.

My eyes darted between Maa and Dad, both looking tensed, Grandma with a nervous smile, and Bhaiya, whose anger was practically radiating off him. They were so engrossed in their conversation that none of them noticed me at first.

"What happened?" I asked, breaking through the thick air of unease. Their heads snapped toward me. Dad's expression quickly shifted, forcing a smile, but it didn't reach his eyes. I could tell he was hiding something, while the rest of their faces remained unchanged, tense and heavy with whatever secret was lingering between them.

"Look, Jaanvi is here," Dad said with a nervous chuckle, trying to lighten the mood, but the silence that followed only deepened my suspicion. My eyebrows furrowed, sensing something off. No one reacted to Dad's words, and the tension in the room remained thick.

"What's going on?" I asked, my gaze locking onto Dad, hoping for an answer.

"Let's talk later. First, go and freshen up," he replied quickly, avoiding my question. Though I nodded, the unease only grew. As I headed toward the stairs, I couldn't help but glance at everyone again, searching their faces for clues. Something wasn't right.

After changing into my comfort clothes, a baggy shirt and medium shorts. I walked back downstairs, the tension in the air still palpable. The atmosphere was thick, almost suffocating. My bare feet echoed softly across the floor, a reminder of our habit to leave shoes outside the door.

As soon as I entered the room, all eyes turned to me, making me the centre of attention. Dad, Maa, and Grandma were sitting together on one side of the room, while Bhaiya sat alone on the sofa opposite them. Without saying a word, I walked over to Bhaiya's sofa and sat down next to him, feeling the weight of the unspoken words between everyone in the room.
