The imperial palace's grandeur crumbled beneath the weight of revolution. Outside, a sea of protesters clamored for the monarchy's downfall. The once-loyal subjects now demanded the emperor's demise.
Two burly guards dragged a frail, 10-year-old Princess Nebula to the grand balcony. Her delicate crown slipped from her head as they tossed her to the floor.
"Fallen princess!" the crowd jeered. "Traitor's daughter! Daughter of a sinner! Kill her!"
Tears streamed down Nebula's face as she heard the venomous words from the people she had sworn to protect. She struggled to stand, but a boot on her head forced her to kneel.
"Kill her!" the crowd chanted.
"Silence!" Army General Orin bellowed, his voice piercing the chaos. "This marks the end of the monarchy. Our planet is finally free from the emperor's tyranny. The second princess will be a symbol of our victory over monarchy."
Orin grasped Nebula's hair, forcing her to stand. He dragged her through the palace, passing the lifeless bodies of her family members. The princess's heart shattered with each step.
In the throne room, Nebula's parents lay motionless. Orin sat on the throne, the princess cowering beneath his boot.
"Your Highness," he sneered, "enjoy your new place."
Nebula's eyes welled with tears, her voice trapped in her throat. Two guards dragged in the bodies of her elder brother and sister.
"Halt!" Orin ordered. "What about the third princess?"
"She fell from a waterfall while trying to escape, sir," a knight replied.
Orin nodded. "Very well."
Nebula whispered, "No...this can't be."
Orin's gaze locked onto hers. "Princess Nebula, face reality. Your family is gone."
General Orin laughed, scooping up Princess Nebula in a bridal carry. He walked out of the throne room and threw her into a cell, slamming the door shut behind her.
Nebula curled up in a ball, her tears unstoppable. "Uahhff! Mummy, Dad!" she cried louder, memories of her family flooding her mind.
Her elder twin siblings' laughter, her younger sister's bright smile, and her parents' loving embraces haunted her.
Three years had passed since her world shattered. Nebula's life transformed from luxury to cruelty.
She was once a princess who slept on soft beds; now she lay on the cold floor, starving. Meals came once every four days, a complete torture for a 10-year-old now 3 years passed she is 13 .
Time passed, yet her pain remained. Her life became a never-ending cycle of suffering.
One day, Nebula's abdomen began bleeding, sending her into a panic. She didn't know what was happening to her.
She wept, missing her family dearly. The harsh reality of her new life consumed her.
"Help! I'm bleeding! Please help!" Princess Nebula cried, rushing to the gate.
The guard looked at her leg, understanding dawned on his face. "It's normal," he said, tossing her a rag. "It will happen every month."
"What do you mean every month? Why is it happening?" Nebula asked, confused.
The guard remained silent.
Another year passed, and a new guard, Arin, was appointed. He quickly grew sympathetic to Nebula's plight.
One day, Arin noticed Nebula bleeding. He slipped into her cell with bread, whispering, "Shh, eat this before anyone sees you."
As he cleaned her leg, he asked, "You don't know anything about menstruation, do you?" Nebula looked at him, then shook her head.
Arin gently stroked her hair. "If I'm not wrong, you're 14 now. I have a daughter your age. I can tell you it's a natural process, preparing your body for motherhood."
Hearing footsteps, Arin rushed out, whispering, "I'll help you as much as I can within my limits."
For the first time in three years, someone showed kindness to Princess Nebula. After that day, Arin secretly brought her bread and fruits.
One day, he whispered, "Take this dagger and wait for my signal, Princess. Today, I will free you." He knelt beside her.
"Why are you doing this for me?" Nebula asked.
Arin smiled. "I have a daughter your age. I couldn't bear seeing you suffer."
"Be ready tonight," he whispered, his eyes locked on hers
She nodded, clutching the dagger tightly.
At midnight, when it was time for the guards to change shifts, Arin entered Nebula's cell. "It's time," he whispered, and handed her a cloak. "Put this on yourself; we don't have much time. Arin said, grabbing her wrist and leading the way out.
They walked through the dark corridor; Nebula's heart was beating faster and faster. Arin's eyes scanned their surroundings while walking.
At the cell, a guard entered with a bowl of thin porridge. He noticed the cell was empty. "Where the hell did she go?" he said to himself and rushed out.
Meanwhile, Arin and Nebula were walking and soon reached a dead end, with a wall in front of them. Nebula looked at Arin; Arin smiled and pushed a brick on the wall, and the wall started rotating.
"Arin, you traitor!" a guard yelled.
Arin and Nebula turned back; some guards were rushing toward them. Arin grabbed Nebula's arm and ran as fast as he could, looking back and using an aura spare on the guards. He stopped on the ground, breathing heavily. Nebula was staring at him.
"Princess, you have to go alone from here," he said, looking into her eyes, but she shook her head.
"Please go, or else everything will be wasted," he pleaded, but she clutched his shirt.
Arin bent down on one knee. "Look at me, Princess. If we get caught, I don't know what will happen to you, but I will die for sure. In either case, I will die. Do you want my sacrifice to go to waste?"
Nebula's grip on his shirt loosened, and she hugged him tightly. "Thank... you."
Arin smiled and stroked her hair. "Go straight from here. There will be a spaceship; go to its control room and press the red button on the panel."
Just then, the sound of footsteps approached. "Now go, Nebula! Run!" Arin exclaimed, then looked at the guard and drew his sword.
"Arin, are you mad?" one guard said. "You still have time to bring that girl back."
Arin charged at the guard with his sword; their swords clashed.
"Arin, don't be foolish," the guard said, soon noticing Arin's other hand gathering aura. His eyes widened. "Arin, are you mad? Are you really doing this for that fallen princess? You're abandoning your own daughter!"
Arin smiled. "Marcus, I'm not abandoning Coco. I'm doing this for the humanity left in me. As for Coco, she'll be proud of her dad."
Arin's smile grew bigger. "Be safe, Princess. I'm sorry, Coco."
Nebula was running as fast as she could. She reached the spaceship, and a massive explosion happened behind her. She turned back, her eyes welling up with tears.
"ARIN!"
Arin's words echoed in her mind: "I will die for sure. What do you want my sacrifice to go to waste?"
Nebula ran inside the ship. "Thank you... Arin."
