Naruto groggily opened his eyes, then shut them back immediately due to the harsh light hitting his eyes.

He then made an effort to open them again, this time more slowly.

The sight of a rather large hospital room came into view.

Naruto, confused, looked to his left. There were two guards standing near the door.

Even more confused, Naruto looked to his right. He found his best friend and advisor, Shikamaru, sitting comfortably on a chair.

When Shikamaru finally noticed Naruto's consciousness, his eyes widened. "Naruto? Oh! You're awake".

Naruto scrunched his eyebrows, "What? Is this another life where I am not Hokage?"

Shikamaru just scowled at him, so he added, "That can't be true, though, given this enormous suite of a hospital room."

"Glad to see you haven't changed at all, Hokage-sama," Shikamaru said, pursing his lips.

Naruto lightly chuckled before asking, "What happened though?"

Shikamaru sat up straighter and answered, "Well, you got attacked during your journey back from the sand village. In the midst of it, you got shot by a poisonous arrow and passed out, so your anbu brought you back."

"Oh? Give my thanks to the Anbu for protecting me so well. Any casualties?" Naruto asked.

Naruto never misses an opportunity to gush over his Anbu; they have spared him the burden of facing the opponent so many times.

"About that..." Shikamaru looked down now, refusing to meet Naruto's gaze, which was ever so curious.

"What happened, Shikamaru?" Naruto urged.

"The enemy were very strong, stronger than whatever we have faced before. You had passed out and needed protection immediately, so an Anbu had to stay back and fend off the enemies while the rest brought you to the safety of the village," Shikamaru explained.

When Naruto didn't say anything, Shikamaru continued, "That Anbu still hasn't returned. We sent out a search party, but still no signs."

The only Anbu with Naruto during that journey were Dog, Neko, and Sun.

Dog was the one standing guard at the door, so it can't be him.

"Who was it?" Naruto asked, his voice suddenly hoarse.

"Sun," Shikamaru replied.

Sun. Hinata. Hinata Hyuga.

Naruto's mind was spinning; how could she stay behind?

"Send out a search party. Right this instant,"  gone was Naruto's playful voice seen just moments before; it was now replaced with an authority only the Hokage could possess.

"As I said before, we already have," Shikamaru made apparent.

"Then send another one!" Naruto snapped.

Why was he acting like this? He didn't know.

Even Shikamaru was taken aback. He took a moment composing himself before signaling to Dog on the door.

"On it," Dog replied before swiftly making his way out the door.

"Calm down. She will be alright," Shikamaru assured after making sure Dog had left.

"I am not worried about her-", Naruto began to say, but stopped in his tracks, seeing the look Shikamaru was giving him.

Actually, Naruto was worried about her. Sun had been working for him ever since he was made Hokage. They maintained a strictly business relationship though, which led to Naruto being confused about why he was feeling like this.

For what seemed like hours, Naruto remained on his hospital bed, blankly signing the paperwork handed over to him by an annoyed Shikamaru.

Noticing that Naruto's mind was obviously elsewhere, Shikamaru eventually gave up.

What interrupted his stillness was a knock on the door.

Shikamaru got up to answer whoever was on the other side.

Given the voices, Naruto assumed it to be an Anbu.

After a few hushed whispers between the said Anbu and Shikamaru, the Anbu poked his head through the door of the unit, "Hokage-sama! Sun is back!".

This was all Naruto needed to hear to get up from his bed, abandon his IVs, and rush out the hospital wing.

Meanwhile, Shikamaru sighed, nodded to the Anbu, and followed the Hokage, where he was headed.

After some questionable looks from the patients in the hospital, Naruto, in his hospital gown, finally reached where 'Sun' or rather, Hinata, was getting treated.

"Hokage-sama!" Hinata sat straighter upon the sight of the Hokage.

Naruto stopped in his tracks and looked at the girl.

She was severely bandaged, having many IVs hooked up to her, and was in an elbow cast.

Naruto wasted no time; he immediately made his way over to her.

Hinata, expecting a handshake, held out her hand.

But Naruto wasn't planning to just shake hands; he hurled himself into her arms, nearly knocking her over at the sudden shock plus impact.

Hinata thought this must have been a mistake. The Hokage must have slipped. He should be planning to release her anytime soon.

Naruto didn't. He held her so tightly that they were nearly one person. Not only that, he kept repeating something in her ears that sounded awfully like, "Hinata, Hinata, Hinata."

He was saying her name like a prayer.

Realization dawned on Hinata; the Hokage was hugging her.

"It's okay, Naruto. I am okay," she assured, sparing the title.

She knew Naruto being called Hokage would not be preferred by him at the moment.

"What happened?" he asked, his arms still wrapped around hers.

"I did manage to defeat the enemies, but I was so injured by the end of it that I couldn't move. Not only that, I was stranded in a position where no one could possibly find me. So I tried hard and eventually got myself to move. Slowly, I started making my way towards the village. That must be why no one could find me. I was constantly on the move," she explained, summarizing the whole lot.

Naruto breathed a sigh of relief, "Never do that again. Not the saving your ass part, but the part where you decided to take the enemy on your own."

"I won't," Hinata promised, and Naruto finally seemed to calm down, so he released her.

Hinata felt cold at the sudden loss of touch. She wanted more. So she did.

Hinata pulled Naruto back. Not a hug this time, but something more.

Hinata kissed Naruto.

Naruto, shocked for a moment, remained still.

Noticing the lack of response, Hinata pulled back. Her face turned red.

Though Naruto had other plans as he pulled Hinata close to him again.

Their mouths locked together, this time more passionately.

Having lost all track of time, space, or where hands might be wandering, their kiss got interrupted by someone clearing their throat.

Naruto looked behind to see Shikamaru smirking.

It seemed Hinata just noticed the presence of Shikamaru, as she pulled back immediately. Making a considerable distance between her and Naruto.

Shikamaru waved a hand to her as if he had not just seen her kissing the Hokage. "Sun. Good job on the mission. I am sure the Hokage shares the same feeling."

He then turned over to Naruto, "Hokage-sama? Shall we leave? You have some work to sign. I am sure you both can catch up later."

Naruto sighed, then he nodded and stood up. His hand unconsciously went over to Hinata's head as he ruffled her hair.

Hinata's eyes widened, then she smiled at the gesture.

"I will see you later," he promised.

Hinata nodded. "Alright."

Before Naruto could say anything else, Shikamaru took his hand and pulled him out the door.

Naruto, a huge grin on his face, looked over his shoulder to find Hinata grinning right back at him.

This was truly unexpected, but Naruto was happy, and so was Hinata.
