Melissa's POV:
.
We were in 6th grade.
I was her best friend.
Or so i thought
Aaliyah hadn't been to school in a week, and she was my only friend.
So I sat there at lunch. Alone everyday. There was no one there to defend me, so the 'popular girls' Millie, who said that Aaliyah had bullied her little sister. Which wasn't true, I was with her the whole time. And Maya, Millie's friend, started picking on me.
'Why do you hang out with Aaliyah? She's mean and a bully,' Maya had said to me.
'She bullied my little sister' Millie said.
'No she didn't, I was with her the whole week' i responded
'Are you assuming I'm a liar?'
'N-no, i-'
Aaliyah started missing school for weeks, and those weeks became months, the teachers didn't know anything either. Rumors said that she had gone missing, and I, stupid as I was, believed them.
Two months of getting picked on by everyone. Every time I walked past a group of students I would hear her name being mentioned and several students would walk up to me and ask me where she was. The truth is, I didn't know.
Until one day....
I get a call from an unknown number, and I pick up the phone. 'hello?'
I hear somebody cry. It's her. 'Melissa... I'm sorry.... We moved back to Copenhagen.'
I lived on the other side of the country.
'Aaliyah....'
I'm speechless.
'W-Why?' I ask her, tears running down my face.
She hangs up.
.
The next day at school, the teachers announce that Aaliyah moved schools, and that the information is too private for them to tell us.
.
The truth was that she hadn't moved.
And you're wondering, how do I know?
I saw her.
Leaving a building.
Near the mall close to our school.
So, the real question is why?
Why would she leave her best friend to all those rumors and mean people?
I don't know.
.
It took me ages to find friends after Aaliyah, because everyone hated me for no reason at all. But after a while, I became friends with Emily Campbell, i thought she was loyal, but she used me for Millie and Maya.
I started defending myself, but still, no friends.
I sat alone at lunch all the time, until the end of year seven where I met Monica, Nicole and Sophie, they sat with me at lunch and they weren't mean to me.
Honestly, I didn't think they'd wanna befriend me, especially Sophie, she's the daughter of one of Denmark's richest men, Peter Monroe. But they did.
We quickly became friends and they introduced me to Claire Stevens and Josie williams. I liked them, they were nice. I always had Michael, but he lived in Italy, Y'know, it's not the same.
I told them everything about Aaliyah and the popular girls. And they said some comforting words that immediately made me feel better.
Then we met Celine from the parallel class, And at the end of year 10, a new girl started in our class, they told me she was gonna sit next to me and that her name was Carolina Anderson.
When she started, on a Monday, we had German classes. I quickly found out that German was her least favorite subject, because she just looked at the essay like it was her worst enemy, but she was too shy to ask me for help. I took the hint and asked her myself.
'Hey, uh, do you need any help?' I asked her.
'That would be lovely, thanks' She said, and we both laughed.
I invited Carolina to sit with us at lunch and she did, I introduced her to the others and she ended up joining our friend group.
