Can The Earth Hear?

Can the earth hear?  Were we not taught in school that there are two classes of things in the world? “Living things” and “non-living things”?   And that only living things (which includes men and animals and reptiles etc.) have the ability to hear and see and feel?  Yet we find the prophet Isaiah proclaiming in the first four verses of the first chapter of the book that bears his name: “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth.”  It means, then, that when the prophetic voice speaks, even non-living things hear.  The distinction between living and non-living things, therefore, is only physical, and for our intellectual convenience.  The earth has the ability to hear, and the heavens also, with all that is in them.  Trees listened when Jesus spoke (Mark 11:14).  A choir of stones was ready to start performing songs in His praise (Luke 19:40).  The disciples testified that the winds and the seas also listened to His voice (Mark 4:41).  And in Mark 11:23, He informed His disciples that they could speak to mountains also.  That was after He had Himself practically demonstrated this truth by talking to a tree the previous day.  In Jonah 2:10, we read, “And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomitted out Jonah upon the dry land.”

All this makes one point, that not only the world of living things, but all creation, (physically ‘living’ or ‘non-living’)   is subject to our dominion, if we would only exercise that dominion.

2     Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

3    The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

4    Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters:  they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward (Isaiah 1:2-4).
