As the days pass, Ananya feels a renewed sense of hope. The tentative agreement to talk more with Arjun fills her with anticipation. She finds herself daydreaming about their conversations, imagining moments where their hands might accidentally brush against each other or where a shared laugh could lead to something deeper.

However, the reality of their situation also weighs heavily on her. Each time she enters the classroom, the air feels charged with unspoken words, and she often catches Arjun’s gaze lingering on her a moment longer than necessary.

During a lecture on literature, Ananya finds it hard to concentrate. She’s distracted, stealing glances at Arjun, who stands at the front of the class, his passion for teaching evident as he discusses the themes of love and sacrifice in the novels they’re studying.

Just as Ananya begins to absorb the lesson, Meera bursts into the classroom, her usual confidence radiating. “Sorry I’m late, Professor! I got caught up with my dance practice,” she says, her tone light but with an underlying intent.

Ananya feels a pang of irritation. Why can’t she just focus on her own work?

Arjun smiles at Meera, his demeanor professional. “Glad you could join us, Meera. Please take your seat.”

Ananya watches as Meera saunters to her usual spot, the seat right in the front row, where she can easily catch Arjun’s attention. Is she trying to show off?

As the lecture continues, Ananya can’t shake the feeling of jealousy that creeps up whenever Meera interacts with Arjun. She’s determined to maintain her focus, but every time Meera giggles or leans forward to ask a question, Ananya feels her resolve waver.

“Ananya, what do you think about the protagonist’s choices?” Arjun asks, pulling her from her thoughts.

Caught off guard, she stammers, “Uh, I think... um, the protagonist is struggling with his emotions and... um, wants to find love but is scared of getting hurt.”

Arjun nods, a small smile playing on his lips. “Exactly. It’s a universal theme.”

The brief interaction makes Ananya’s heart flutter, but she quickly glances at Meera, who is watching with a triumphant smirk. Why do I let her get to me?

Later that afternoon, Ananya finds solace in her friends. “You okay? You seem a bit off,” Riya observes as they sit together in the cafeteria.

“I don’t know, it’s just... Meera is always around Arjun, and it drives me crazy,” Ananya admits, frustration seeping into her voice.

“Maybe you should talk to him about it. You’ve already confessed your feelings,” Aisha suggests.

“I know, but I don’t want to seem insecure,” Ananya replies, glancing at her friends. “What if he thinks I’m jealous and decides it’s not worth it?”

“Ananya, you can’t worry about that. Be honest with him. If he truly cares, he’ll understand,” Riya encourages.

Ananya nods, knowing they’re right. But fear lingers in the back of her mind.

That evening, she decides to text Arjun, asking if they can meet after school to talk. She sends the message, her heart racing as she waits for his reply.

“Sure! Meet me by the library at 5,” he responds a few minutes later.

As she prepares to meet him, anxiety knots in her stomach. She wants to express her feelings and clarify their boundaries, but the thought of confronting him makes her palms sweat.

When she arrives at the library, she finds Arjun leaning against the wall, a warm smile lighting up his face. “Hey, Ananya! Thanks for coming.”

“Thanks for meeting me,” she replies, her voice a bit shaky.

They walk together in silence for a moment before Ananya gathers her courage. “I wanted to talk about... us. About how we’ve been feeling since the Spring Fête.”

Arjun nods, his expression serious. “I’ve been thinking about it too.”

“I just wanted to say that I appreciate your willingness to talk, but I also feel like Meera is always around, and it’s hard for me to focus,” Ananya admits, her voice barely above a whisper.

“I understand. Meera can be quite... persistent,” he replies, a hint of amusement in his tone.

“Do you like her?” Ananya asks, feeling a surge of vulnerability.

No, Ananya. I like you,” he says firmly, his gaze steady. “But we need to keep things professional for now. I care about your future, and I don’t want to jeopardize it.”

Ananya feels a mix of relief and frustration. “I get that, but it’s hard to watch you interact with her. I don’t want to feel this way.”

“I promise, I’ll be more mindful. You deserve to feel secure,” Arjun reassures her.

“Thank you. I just want to be honest with you,” Ananya says, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. “I really like you, and I want to see where this could go.”

“Me too,” Arjun replies, his voice softening. “Let’s take it slow and see how we can make this work without compromising anything.”

With a shared understanding, they agree to be open and honest about their feelings while maintaining their professional boundaries. Ananya feels lighter, hopeful for the future, yet aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

As they part ways, Ananya can’t help but smile. She knows the road ahead won’t be easy, but with Arjun’s support, she feels empowered to face whatever comes next.
