"Lilly-Mae! It's 5:30 in the morning and you're late on your chores! You best get up before your father comes in for breakfast." I heard her, even if I didn't want to. I rolled to the side, my blonde hair falling around me. Rule of the ranch is a 5 am wake up call, every morning rain or shine. I shimmied on a pair of blue jeans, threw on a tank top and jean jacket before shaking my boots out. I checked the calendar on my phone, it was a Tuesday morning which meant I was on maintaince duty for the pigs, sheep and chickens. With the seasons changing we had to be wrapped up for the cold. Frozen animals meant skipped meals. I ran a brush through my tangles, putting on my hat. I walked down the steps my feet echoing. I walked to the kitchen where my momma and siblings were. Out of ten kids, only two were inside with her. Sue Ann was 11 months old and didn't have much of a choice but my little brother Dylan, who was 4 was a surprise to see. He saw me and giggled, using my boots as a step stool to hug me. I gave both the little ones a kiss on the cheek and went to my momma. "Mornin' momma." She turned from the skillet of sausages and slanted her eyes at me. "Lily Mae you know you can't be sleeping in!" I sighed a rubbed the edge of my hat, "Sorry momma. One of the cows had a calf last night and Dad needed some help. You know that the boys aren't good with bringing life into the world. They get all nauseous and can't hold down dinner." With this information she nodded, pointing to the plate where she added the sausages. Moving over to Sue Ann she picked her up and placed her on the floor. "Makes sense why you're Dad wasn't upset last night. Eat up, make sure your wolf is full. Can't have her going hungry." " Of course not momma."
It doesn't take me long to eat the five pancakes, sausages and ham my momma made for me. I gave her a kiss on the cheek and headed to the chicken coop first. A box of tools were waiting for me. When I opened the door my second youngest brother Ethan was inside. He was only nine. His curly red hair stuck out from the ball cap he was wearing. Wide eyes stuck on me. "Lily Mae you scared me! You're a whole hour late." I noticed the basket in his hand almost empty. Ethan was terrified of the bright red hen we named Demonica. She was as terrifying as ever and pecked you like the dickens when you took her eggs. When Ethan was six he was spurred by one of our roosters, ever since then all things chicken terrified him. We tried to talk Dad out of making him collect the eggs, but it was a lost battle. Ethan looked at me and motioned to Demonica. "Please Sissy?" I chuckled and went to the Hen. She tried to get after me, but a firm press into her neck with her head against the wood. I reached under and pulled out the 6 eggs she was sitting on. Handing them to my little brother he smiled wide. The rest of the chicken coop was easy, all the other chickens were calm compared to Demonica.
I walked around the coop having to do a few patched with some scrap wood. I noticed some scratches on the far back, it seems a fox tried and failed to get in. For extra protection I put a large piece of wood as an added baseboard, just in case it got to weak.
By 6:40 am I was headed to the pigs. Three of my brothers were inside, mucking away the sludge. I noticed two shelters where the tin was coming up. Alex, Gabriel and Nicholas were working together to feed and water. "Well lookie there, sleeping beauty finally woke up!" Gabriel called out, being the youngest of the three boys. At the age of 23, Alex was tall with blue eyes and black hair. It was short and military cut, a strick look was sent to Gabriel. When his eyes turned to me, they softened. "You feeling alright?" I smiled brightly at him. "I'm ok, Dad just needed help with a calf birth last night." Nicholas ignored the chatter, turning his eyes to me and pointed to a metal trough. "We got a leak in that one, can you path it?" I walked over to the trouph, a large split was forming on the side of it. "If you carry it to the welding barn I can patch it." He nodded and they put it to the side. I fixed the pigs shelters, adding extra screws to keep the tin down. When I was done I noticed my brothers already took the trough out. I slipped in and did the weld, when it was cooled down and they could take it back to the pigs.
My next main job was the sheep pen. It had been around five hours since the start of my day. When I arrived Dad was there with Brodey and David. "Where's Sean?" They all turned to me. "Something killed three sheep last night, he's hunting it. Come look over here." He showed me where we had the sheep's body's, long sharp claws ripped into them." They stayed quiet while I examined them. Torn from the bones where its flesh and wool. I held one up and breathed in. My eyes flashed yellow as my wolf took in the sent. "Rouges." Dad nodded, Brodey and David sighing. "How many Lily Mae?" I took in a deep breathe. I bypassed the blood and dirt, inhaling while looking for the scent. " four. All males. Smells like pine trees and oak. Definitely not from around here." He nodding, sending David to go help Sean just in case.
We patched up the fence, it was time for lunch now. As we all washed up and sat down Dads phone rang. He answered it and left the room. Right as he was done Sean and David walked in. I could smell the mud on their feet, the thick oak smell of the forest. Dad looked at us all, face blanched. "No time for lunch. Lily Mae, Alex, Sean and David we have to report to the pack house. Now."
