The next morning arrived too soon for Anastasia's comfort. The cool light of dawn filtered through her apartment windows, casting a pale glow across the room. She stood by her dresser, staring blankly at her reflection, feeling the weight of what she had to do today pressing heavily on her chest.
Zayne deserved to know the truth.
Her heart ached at the thought of hurting him. Zayne had always been kind and patient with her, his love expressed through quiet gestures rather than grand declarations. The nights they spent together, though not frequent due to his demanding schedule at the hospital, were filled with warmth and security. He was her safe space. Yet, there was no denying the electric pull Sylus had on her. Where Zayne was reserved, Sylus was bold, commanding her attention in ways that left her breathless. How could she possibly explain to Zayne that she had fallen for another man—one who was his complete opposite?
Dressed in a soft, cream-colored blouse and dark jeans, she decided to keep her appearance simple. She didn't want Zayne to think she was hiding behind an elegant facade. Today required honesty, and that included facing him as herself, no masks or pretenses.
As she made her way to the hospital where Zayne worked, her stomach knotted with every step. She replayed their memories together, hoping to find the right words but only finding fear. Zayne had opened his heart to her slowly, cautiously. She had been the one to break down his walls. How would he react to learning there was someone else?
When she finally arrived at Akso Hospital, a familiar sense of tension filled her. The sterile white walls, the antiseptic smell, the muffled sound of footsteps moving hurriedly in the distance—it was all so familiar. She had visited him here more times than she could count. This was his sanctuary, the place where Zayne was untouchable—confident and sure of himself in a way that few others ever got to witness.
After a brief conversation with the receptionist, she found herself heading up to Zayne's office, her heart pounding with every step. She knocked lightly on the door, her breath caught in her throat.
"Come in," his voice called out from the other side.
Pushing the door open, Anastasia stepped into the room to find Zayne sitting behind his desk, his eyes focused on a report. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, a sign of his usual exhaustion, and his white coat draped over the back of his chair. He looked up at her with a soft smile, his stern features relaxing as soon as he saw her.
"Ana," he said, standing up and moving towards her. He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. "I didn't expect to see you here so early."
His touch made her chest tighten. This was going to be even harder than she thought.
"I wanted to talk to you," she said, her voice faltering for a moment.
Zayne's expression shifted slightly, the subtle change in her tone not lost on him. He could always sense when something was off. He stepped back slightly, his arms crossing as he leaned against the desk. "Is something wrong?" His voice was calm, but there was a flicker of concern in his eyes.
Anastasia took a deep breath, steadying herself. "I need to tell you something... something important."
He studied her carefully, his eyes narrowing slightly, but he remained silent, waiting for her to continue.
"There's someone else," she finally blurted out, her words hanging heavy in the air between them. She watched as the confusion in his eyes morphed into something deeper—hurt, maybe even betrayal, but he didn't say a word. His jaw tightened, and she could see the way he was holding himself back, controlling the initial wave of emotion that surged through him.
