Sophia's POV:

I gathered my things, still feeling the rush of adrenaline from my exchange with Christian. I couldn't believe I had let myself flirt, even a little. It felt new, different. He had this effortless charm that disarmed me, but I quickly reminded myself of the walls I'd built around my heart.

"Ari, did you see that?" I said, shaking my head in disbelief as we walked out of the classroom. "He's bold, isn't he?"

Ariana nudged me playfully. "You mean he's confident. I like it! Not many guys have the guts to ask for your number on the first day."

"Yeah, well, I'm not just any girl," I replied, trying to play it cool, even though my heart was racing. "I don't fall for athletes. They're usually just full of themselves."

"Maybe this one's different," Ariana teased, a sly smile on her face. "You should at least give him a chance. What's the worst that could happen?"

I rolled my eyes, but there was a part of me that was curious about Christian. "I don't know, Ari. It's only been one conversation. He might just be another jock trying to impress me."

As we stepped into the bustling hallway, the energy of the school wrapped around me like a familiar blanket. It was a world I had navigated for years, but something about today felt different. I glanced back to see Christian chatting with Bryce, his relaxed demeanor standing in stark contrast to the typical bravado I expected from athletes.

"Aren't you even a little intrigued?" Ariana pressed, nudging me again.

I sighed, knowing she was right. There was a spark of something new, and I couldn't shake the thought of his dark hair and those intense eyes. "Maybe a little. But that doesn't mean I'm going to throw myself at him."

"Just don't be too closed off. You might miss out on something great." She shot me a knowing look.

Before I could respond, the bell rang again, signaling the start of our next class. We hurried down the hallway, and I tried to focus on the lesson ahead, but my mind kept wandering back to Christian. What was it about him that was so different? I had met countless guys who were all flash and no substance, but he seemed like he was just... there. No showboating, no flashy moves—just a genuine vibe that intrigued me.

"Hey, Sophia!" A voice called from behind. I turned to see Christian jogging up to me, his backpack slung over one shoulder, a grin plastered on his face.

"Yeah?" I responded, trying to keep my tone casual.

"About earlier," he said, catching up. "I meant what I said. I'd like to get to know you better."

I raised an eyebrow, pretending to think it over. "And how do you plan on doing that, basketball star?"

He chuckled, the sound warm and inviting. "Well, for starters, I could take you out for coffee or something this weekend. Just two people getting to know each other, no pressure."

"Coffee, huh?" I said, pretending to contemplate it. I could feel Ariana's eyes boring into me, silently urging me to say yes. "What if you're just looking for someone to be a distraction while you settle into your new life here?"

He stopped walking, his expression shifting to something more serious. "I promise, I'm not like that. I'm just looking for real connections, you know? You're the first person here who seems... interesting."

His words sent a flutter through my stomach. "Interesting? Is that what you call me?"

"Absolutely," he replied, his tone sincere. "You're not just another pretty face. There's depth to you, and I'd like to see more."

I couldn't help the smile that crept onto my face. "Okay, maybe I'll consider it. But don't think you can charm me so easily."

"Wouldn't dream of it," he said with a wink. "But I will earn that number."

As we reached our next classroom, I felt a strange mix of excitement and apprehension. I had spent so long keeping my distance from guys like him, and here I was, considering a date with Christian Valcosta, the basketball prodigy everyone was talking about.

With a final wave, he turned to head to his seat, and I felt my heart race. What was happening to me? This wasn't like me at all. I had always been careful, cautious, and now I found myself willing to take a chance.

"Okay, Soph, what just happened?" Ariana asked, her eyes wide with excitement as we took our seats.

I shook my head, unable to suppress the smile on my lips. "I don't know, but I think I just might have found trouble."

"Or something amazing," she countered, nudging me again.

Maybe she was right. Maybe today was the start of something unexpected. As the teacher began the lesson, I stole a glance back at Christian, and our eyes met for a brief moment. I felt a spark, a connection that was undeniable.

Whatever this was, I was ready to see where it might lead.
