"Violet, go grab your sister, we need to have a talk as a family." Vivien Harmon, your mother, sighs as she gives your sister, Violet Harmon instructions. Vivien is sat on the couch, a noticeable distance away from your father Ben, the air is thick. Violet glances at the empty space between the two of them which, up until a month ago, wouldn't have been there. Violet lets out a small groan before nodding, walking halfway up the stairs before yelling up to you. "Mom and dad want to have a 'family meeting'. I suggest going downstairs now so we can stop pretending everything is ok sooner." and with that, she can be heard going back down the stairs, along with your mother's gasp and 'subtle' scolding. Her scolding was never subtle. she likes to say it is but everyone will say otherwise. In your words you would describe Vivien as an almond mom. She doesn't like buying processed food, she counts everyone's calories, keeps the house looking as modern as possible, loses her mind when things start to deter from how she wants them. She's not a bad mother, you and Violet are actually quite fond of her. The two of you are fond of both your parents however, you're not fond of pretending everything is ok. You've known longer than your mother and violet of your father's infidelity, in fact, you watched the entire situation go down.

A month ago today it happened. Hidden in a bush in front of your house since you were skipping class that day. you watched as a car rolled into the driveway. That was not your mother's car and that was definitely not your father's car. There was a woman inside of it, maybe four years older than you and your sister, you clocked her as your father's student. you realized that quickly, after all, you've looked at all of his work files. if you recall correctly, her name is hayden mcclaine, she's a psychology student, and she often asks for after class help. She got out of her car and sauntered over to the door, not knocking on it, she just stood there and after forty-five seconds, you counted them, the door opened and your father stood there with a wide smile.

You entered the house after five minutes of waiting. In theory, the house would have been cleared by that point, sneaking in would have been fine. You went in through the back door just to be safe and crept up the stairs. That's when you heard it, giggling and the unzipping of jeans, the sound of denim dropping to the floor. The sound made you feel ill, your own hand, as if having a mind of its own slapped over your mouth as you tiptoed to your room. Your father, the man who you built your entire perception of how a man should treat his wife, just caught cheating on his wife in her bed. You sobbed silently to yourself up until you heard the front door open. the piercing sound of the knife being picked up from its spot on the counter reverberated through the otherwise silent hallway. the sound of the stairs which usually never creak, creaked under your mother's feet. The sound of laughter cut short, the sound of arguing, the sound of running, and then finally, the sound of screaming all made its way to your eardrums as you ran to your closet to sob even harder.

which leads you to now, your parents sat the uncomfortably far distance from each other on the couch, while you and Violet sat on the smaller couch in front of them.

"As you're aware, your father and I are going through... a rough patch." Your mother swallows thickly at the first sentence. she closes her eyes for a second to recover as she thinks about that day. "We're going to try going to church to see if we can fix our... situation." You and violet give each other a displeased look. "they're going to tell him to put on a chastity belt," you whisper to Violet, who snickers at your remark. "as if the father can fix their problem-" your mother cuts Violet off from finishing her sentence and she scolds the both of you for not taking her seriously. "It's your mom's idea." Your father chimes in but it was one of the last things you wanted to hear from him.

to your surprise and immense displeasure, you find yourself in the car with your entire family on the way to the church. It's an old church; the cross is missing a small piece of it, there's moss growing everywhere, a few windows are cracked and missing. "We live in a rich area, why on earth are we at some run down shack basically in the middle of nowhere?" You ask with some attitude, it was mostly a rhetorical question for Violet, however your mother over heard and responded. "because y/n, we have heard great things about this church. maybe it's time we stop being so judgmental and critical of things and experience everything we can." Your mother's tone is harsh, she's clearly fed up with everything. You glance over at violet who's currently giving you a knowing look, a look that says 'stay clear of mom, she's pissed and might claw your eyes out.'

You and Violet wanted to explore the outside of the church but your parents instructed you to follow them inside immediately. There are four nuns lined up on each side of the door, each one giving your family a look of distress and worry when you walk in. "The priest is at the very end of the building, he's been waiting for you." your father nods, attempting to grab your mother's hand which she begrudgingly takes. "Ah, leave your girls here, you two must talk to the father alone." one of the nuns whisper to your parents. They give you a look of acknowledgement, to which you and Violet nod in understanding. the two of you walk off in the other direction, going outside to the front. Before you're able to make it to the front, one of the nuns grab you, separating you from your sister. "We can sense a great danger looming over you." The nun's voice is weary as she speaks, her voice is wobbly and it cracks as she continues. "There is an evil waiting for your family, we can all sense it." You try to pry her hands off of your arm and when you go to scream another pair of hands come from behind you, placing one over your mouth while the other one strokes the top of your head. "we want to protect you, listen to us! your family is unsafe." Your hands make their way up to the hands currently placed over your mouth. There's a struggle as you claw at their hands, trying so desperately to get them off of you, but just as quickly as they had grabbed you, they let go and walk to the side of you taking you back to your sister. The two of you reunite, giving each other a look of confusion as the current situation at hand. Were the two of you told the same thing??

"Your parents will be out shortly. The father is a very good man, I'm sure their marriage will be saved." a different nun chimes in. Her voice is much smoother than the other's but this one has an underlying edge to it, almost as if she doesn't believe what she's saying. You grimace while giving her an uncomfortable thumbs up. Violet gives you an equally uncomfortable look. Your parents come out from wherever they were in the church, the look on both of their faces is unpleasant. Your mother in particular looks pissed, she practically snatches you and violet's hands and storms out of the building while your father follows behind.

The car ride home is tense. You can only assume that their talk with the priest went about as well as your talk with the nuns, but something inside of you wonders about what happened in that church. It wasn't long before violet spoke up, attempting to break the ice. "So... did they tell you the only option was a chastity belt?" You giggle as your mother lets out a disgruntled 'tsk'. "They didn't say our only option was a chastity belt. Don't worry about what they told us, it doesn't concern you." Your father says while driving. "We're moving. Your mother and I have decided we're going to move us out of our house and into this new one in California and we're going to rebuild everything." That earns protest from violet. "You can't move us just because you couldn't keep it in your pants! that's unfair, me and y/n are still in school, it's the middle of the year!" she begins before your mother cuts her off. "This will be good for us. It's a nice house with a rich history. We're going to fly down as a family to go see it." There's a false sincerity in her voice. She's trying to convince herself that this is what she wants, you can tell. Violet can tell. Ben can tell. The false honey in her voice and the way she completely blew off Violet's comment about your father showed you everything you needed to know.
