That night, as Lucifer approached his apartment, the cool air clinging to his skin, he spotted Alastor standing at the door. The bodyguard was stiff, his hands shoved into his pockets, his expression carefully blank as always. But there was something different about the way he held himself, something tense that Lucifer immediately picked up on.
Lucifer stopped in front of him, raising an eyebrow. "What's this? A surprise visit?" His voice dripped with sarcasm, but Alastor remained silent, his eyes briefly flicking down.
"Boss," Alastor said quietly, his voice controlled but carrying the weight of something unsaid. That one word hung in the air, thick with meaning.
Lucifer smirked, recognizing the undercurrent. He knew what this was about—the punch, the lie, everything he had done to Alastor that day. Despite the smug satisfaction Lucifer had felt at the time, there was something about Alastor's quiet presence now that made him pause. There was no anger, no accusation in Alastor's tone. Just... tension.
With a small chuckle, Lucifer stepped aside and gestured to the door. "You wanna come in? Or are we going to stand out here in awkward silence?"
Alastor hesitated, but after a moment, he nodded and followed Lucifer inside. The apartment was dimly lit, the soft hum of the city outside filling the space with a muted background noise. Lucifer tossed his coat onto a chair and made his way to the small bar near the window. "You drink?" he asked, grabbing a glass.
Alastor shook his head, still standing near the entrance, his eyes scanning the room. "No, thank you."
Lucifer poured himself a drink, taking a long sip before turning back to face Alastor. "You gonna tell me why you're really here? Or do I have to guess?"
Alastor shifted, his eyes briefly meeting Lucifer's before looking away again. "I wanted to... apologize for earlier. For the punch."
Lucifer let out a low laugh. "Oh, that? Please. I've taken worse. It's nothing."
Alastor's jaw tightened, and he nodded slightly. "And... I wanted to thank you."
Lucifer raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Thank me? For what? I was the one who set you off."
"For making me realize something," Alastor said quietly, his voice almost too soft to hear. "About my sister."
Lucifer studied him for a moment, his usual detachment faltering as something flickered behind his eyes. "Is that all?" he asked, stepping closer, his gaze narrowing. "Because I think there's more to this little visit, Alastor."
Alastor swallowed hard, his posture stiffening again as Lucifer approached. "Boss, I—"
"Stop calling me 'boss'," Lucifer interrupted, his voice sharper now. "You don't come here at this hour just to apologize. There's something else, isn't there?"
Alastor's silence was all the confirmation Lucifer needed. He could feel the tension between them growing, thickening the air with unspoken things. And for the first time in a long time, Lucifer felt something stirring inside him—something unfamiliar and unsettling. Normally, he would've brushed off any potential for attachment, distanced himself from anyone who could pull him into something deeper. But with Alastor, it was different.
Lucifer couldn't deny that he was drawn to him, despite everything. Despite Alastor's refusal to engage with his advances, despite the rejection, there was something about the way Alastor stood there, so solid and stoic, that made Lucifer want to break through that wall. To push him, to test him.
Lucifer stepped closer, his eyes locked onto Alastor's. "You're a tough one to crack, aren't you?" he murmured, a teasing edge to his voice. "I thought by now you'd be more open to... exploring things."
