Rose stared down the recipe book as if it had personally wronged her, or said something bad about her mother (which she wouldn't necessarily object to).
She didn't know what a stiff peak was, despite her experience with cooking for herself, she was never the best as baking. All of Rose's attempts at such a thing turned out burnt or some kind of just slightly off. But she was going to get this right, dammit!
She couldn't just waltz around this girl with every baking trick in the book, and expect to impress her with a simple treat. She had to make this count. After who knows how long in the kitchen, googling, stirring, stirring, mixing, mixing, and more mixing, Rose finally finished up the cake. It looked...fine, she supposed. But not good enough! Not nearly enough to sweep the heiress to the (probably tainted) Crocker line off her feet!
But the clock was ticking until she arrived, so some touch-ups and a lot of luck would have to do. She was pacing the kitchen and on the verge of crossing her fingers in attempts to salvage some hope in the possibility that her baking skills, for a beginner, would be enough to impress.
She heard a knock on her door in that ever-so-jolly tune, and scrambled across the floor to go and open it, sporting the look of the average clumsy anime protagonist who happened to be late for school on the first day.
She swung the door open, giving a small, polite wave.
"Hello!" God, did that sound too formal? Jane waved back, her smile reaching her eyes and making the dimples in her rosy cheeks quite visible.
"I have something for you." Rose fiddled with her sleeve.
"Oh? And whatever would that be?" Jane cocked her head.
"Come in." Rose stepped back, beckoning Jane with a sweep of her arm. She stepped out of the doorway and further inside, peering over the corner into the kitchen.
"Oh my gosh!" Jane grinned, stepping into the kitchen and looking down at the cake.
"Shucks, you didn't have to do all that!" She breathed, hugging Rose. Rose breathed a sigh of relief.
"Well, I suppose you should try it before judging my skill. Unless you can tell how a cake tastes by sight, which I wouldn't exactly doubt for someone like you." She quipped.
"Of course!" Jane grabbed for a knife, cutting the cake, and served herself a slice.
Rose watched in anticipation and slight dread, as she took a bite. Jane gave a 'hmm', and a soft smile.
"It's really good! I can basically taste the blood, sweat and tears that went into this, hoohoo!" She laughed, sending a warm feeling through Rose's chest.
"It's really not much.." Rose rubbed the back of her neck self-consciously, eyes darting away.
"Oh, that's a bunch of baloney and you know it!" Jane poked Rose's cheek. "It's really thoughtful of you!"
"I guess it is." Rose caved in, looking fondly at Jane.
