"No, but you had to see it, Niall, it was priceless! And her face!" I said, as Niall clutched his stomach laughing.
"You... You... You really said th--" he said between gasps and continued laughing. I laughed as well, his laugh being contagious.
I loved watching him laugh. His face would get red, and he had hiccup laughs which were extremely adorable.
When the waiter came by our booth to write down our orders, I ordered a hamburger with french fries and chicken wings. So did Niall.
This date wasn't actually that bad. And he hasn't tried anything on me yet, so that was good, too. I had to constantly remind myself that I wasn't supposed to enjoy this date, but I ended up doing exactly that.
"So what do you do for a livin'?" he asked.
"Oh, I'm still in high school," I muttered, feeling embarrassed. "I had to stay back a year..."
"Oh," is all he said. He didn't ask why.
Not that I really cared what he thought of me, but I felt like explaining why, and telling him it wasn't because I failed. No, it was because that was around the period my mother died. The year everything went wrong.
I cleared my throat, uncomfortable at the memory I tried so hard to forget, and smiled up at Niall, who was just staring at me blankly. "What about you?"
"I'm doing Civil Engineering at uni,"
I frowned. "How old are you?"
"Twenty one."
I pursed my lips, and looked down at my hands. I was seventeen. He was four years older. Honestly, would this all even work out if I'd consider it? He was studying Civil Engineering at a university for crying out loud! Even if something happened between us, he'd be at university, and I'd never see him.
And I wouldn't know what he'd be doing around that university with all the other girls there. I didn't get what he wanted with me, still. I was just an ordinary girl with nothing special, and I bet there were millions of 'hot' girls at that university, more his style.
But actually it was a good thing he was at university. That way I'd never see him. And my life would be normal. Without him bothering me. I wanted that, right? Of course I did. He was nothing but bad news. All I had to do was get this over with and then I'd never see him again. Problem solved.
"Burger with fries and medium chicken wings?"
I looked up at the waiter, and signalled her that it was my order. She handed the other plate to Niall, and we started eating in silence. The burger was so good, and I finished it in a minute. The fries were gone after another minute, and the chicken wings took five.
Niall finished his in incredible speed as well, and he looked at me the same way I was looking at him. Amazed.
"I've never seen a girl eat that fast," he commented while cleaning his mouth with a napkin.
"Was that a compliment?" I asked him, smiling.
"Maybe," He shrugged, and got up. "Are ya ready to go?"
A little baffled, I got up and walked outside, starting for the parking lot, waiting for him to pay. I'd feel bad about letting him pay, but he was the one who wanted me here so bad. If it was up to me, I would have walked home instead of hitching that ride with him that day my car was stolen.
I took in a few deep breaths, happy how it gone so far, and happy it was over. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it that much, and I was going to have to tell him goodbye. Because it would be the last time I'd see him. I'd be home in a bit and it'd all be over.
