Dear Amy,

How are you doing? Are you still writing in your dairy? I hope you are, later in life you will thank me for having you write things down. How is Mary Jane? Is she being nice to you? You know she was a friend of Mother's. I hope you are still singing, you always sang so beautifully. Oh, I almost forgot, what about that little blue bird you picked up when you were leaving? Is it okay?

Amy, I know you wonder why I sent you away-- it was for your protection. I don't really know what else to say about that other than I love you. I know when you get a little older and can understand more that you will forgive me and know that I did it to help you. I couldn't leave you here with Father. Pretty soon I will be an adult, and I will be able to leave, but there is no way for me to take you with me. Women and girls have no rights, and if I tried to take it to court they would dismiss it. They would have you stay with Father. I would never leave you with him, so this was the only way for me to be able to leave too.

Father wasn't always like this, you know? I know you are too young to remember, but before Mother died we were happy. He was happy. He loved Mother a lot and when she died, it tore our family apart, Father started to drink, and soon afterwards, became violent. I know that doesn't justify how he treated us in any way. I just thought you should know that there was a time that we were happy, and he loved us.         Father didn't care when he couldn't find you. I'm not saying that to hurt your feelings, but he just sees you as a problem. You rarely spoke to anyone; he thought you were messed up. The only reason that he even kept you around after Mother died was because of me. He knew how much I loved you and he knew that if he kept you that I wouldn't want to leave when I turned eighteen. He wants me to take over the family business. That's not what I want to do. I want to experience life. I was thinking of going to New York and starting my own business. Maybe even find love there. Father won't like that, but by then I will be gone. I will come visit you after I leave, and we can spend more time together then.

Don't forget to be good for Mary Jane, and I will write to you soon. I love you so much, Amy. Always remember that is the only reason why I had to send you away. Maybe when I get settled in New York and can afford to, I will send money for you, and we could live together again.   I love you, Andrew
