Jade walked into the penthouse, her shoulders heavy with the weight of her first day at Ravenhurst University. The opulence that had initially dazzled her now felt like a closed cage, trapping her in an unfamiliar world full of hidden pressures.
She headed straight to her room, a newfound sanctuary amidst the overwhelming new surroundings. The walls were adorned with tasteful art, and the large windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline, but tonight, Jade barely noticed. She dropped her backpack on the marble floor and flopped onto her bed, staring at the ceiling as the events of the day replayed in her mind.
She thought about Elias's strained interaction with Mr. Harrington there was so much she didn't understand, and it ate at her, Alex was vague about this as well which added a strain on Jade. She knew she couldn't just sit back and let things happen around her. She had to be proactive, to observe and learn. Only then could she hope to navigate this new life and understand Elias and his struggles.
Deciding to clear her mind, Jade stood and walked over to the large windows. The city lights gleamed below, a constant reminder of the world she was now a part of. She watched the cars moving like tiny ants, the people living their lives, each with their own stories and struggles.
The sound of footsteps in the hallway caught her attention. Her mother appeared in the doorway, a soft smile on her face. "How was your first day, sweetheart?"
Jade turned, managing a small smile in return. "It was for sure different. I'm still getting used to everything."
Elaine walked in and sat on the edge of the bed. "I know it's a lot to take in. But give it time. You'll find your place."
Jade nodded, appreciating her mother's reassurance but knowing that it would take more than just time. "Thanks, Mom. I'll try."
Her mother patted her hand and stood up. "Dinner will be ready soon. Richard is looking forward to hearing about your day."
Jade's stomach tightened at the mention of Richard. Dinner with him always felt like navigating a minefield of polite conversation and hidden tensions. "Okay, I'll be there in a minute."
As her mother left the room, Jade took a deep breath, steeling herself for the evening ahead. Tonight's dinner would be another opportunity to observe and learn, to piece together the puzzle of her new family dynamics.
Jade climbed the grand staircase as she approached the dining room, the familiar scent of gourmet cuisine wafted through the air, reminding her of the many changes in her life.
Her mother, elegant in a simple yet stylish dress, was already seated, engaged in a quiet conversation with Richard. He oozed an air of authority, his presence controlling the room. Jade took a deep breath and entered the dining room, offering a polite smile.
"Good evening," she greeted, taking her seat across from her mother.
"Good evening, Jade," Richard responded, his tone cordial but distant. "How was your first day at Ravenhurst University?"
"It was fascinating," Jade replied carefully, recalling the day's events. "The school is amazing, and the classes are challenging. I met some new people."
"Challenging is good," Richard said, nodding approvingly. "It means you'll grow."
Jade's mother smiled warmly at her. "I'm glad to hear that. I know it's a big adjustment, but you'll find your way."
Jade's eyes flickered toward the empty seat next to Richard. "Is Elias joining us for dinner?"
Richard's expression hardened slightly. "Elias had some business to attend to. He's often busy with various commitments."
