Ava sat on the worn-out sofa in her cramped college apartment, staring at the stack of textbooks sprawled across the coffee table. The soft hum of late autumn drifted through the open window, carrying the scent of wet leaves and distant bonfires. It was her final year of college, and the weight of it all was starting to sink in.
"Last year, can you believe it?" Clara's voice broke through Ava's thoughts as she plopped down next to her. Clara, her best friend since freshman year, had a way of making even the most stressful situations seem lighter. She was effortlessly cool, with wild, curly hair and a laugh that could fill a room. "One more year and we're out of here."
Ava smiled, though the feeling didn't quite reach her eyes. Clara, ever the optimist, saw graduation as the gateway to the rest of their lives, but Ava felt something else entirely—uncertainty. The kind that gnawed at her late at night when she couldn't sleep.
"I know," Ava said, running a hand through her straight, dark hair. "It feels like it went by in a blur. But also like it took forever, you know?"
Clara nodded, pulling out her phone and scrolling absently. "I get it. It's weird to think we're about to leave this place behind. All these late-night study sessions, the stupid parties, the endless exams... it's almost over."
Ava sighed. "Yeah, and then what? Real life?"
Clara gave her a playful nudge. "Oh, come on. Don't get all existential on me now. You're going to be amazing. You've got that internship lined up at the publishing house, remember?"
Ava shrugged. "If it works out. I mean, they might not even offer me a full-time job after I graduate."
"They will." Clara's confidence in her was unwavering. It always had been, ever since that first day in their freshman dorm when they'd bonded over their shared love of classic literature and disdain for the dining hall food.
The thought of leaving college, leaving Clara, felt heavier than Ava wanted to admit. They'd been through so much together—endless nights of cramming for exams, navigating the murky waters of college relationships, and supporting each other through every personal crisis. Clara had always been her rock, her compass. The idea of a future without their easy companionship, without knowing that Clara would be there just a text away, was daunting.
Clara glanced at the clock on the wall. "Okay, enough of the doom and gloom. We've got to head to that career fair soon."
Ava groaned. "Do we have to? It's just going to be a bunch of recruiters pretending they care about us, trying to get us to apply for jobs we don't even want."
"Exactly," Clara said, standing up and stretching. "Which is why we're going to charm the pants off of them. I mean, it's our last year—we might as well take advantage of all the free swag they're giving out."
Ava chuckled despite herself. Clara always knew how to make her laugh. It was one of the reasons they'd become inseparable. While Ava tended to overthink every decision, Clara moved through life with a kind of effortless grace, trusting that everything would work out.
They headed out, the brisk air nipping at their cheeks as they walked across campus. The familiar sound of leaves crunching beneath their feet was oddly comforting, like the rhythm of college life ticking away as it always had. Yet everything felt different now. The countdown had begun.
As they neared the student center, where the career fair was being held, Ava glanced over at Clara. She was walking with her usual confident stride, her head held high, as if the future couldn't intimidate her.
"Are you ever scared about what comes next?" Ava asked, her voice softer now, vulnerable.
Clara turned her head slightly, her expression softening. "Honestly? Yeah, sometimes. But I try not to let it get to me. We've made it this far, right? We'll figure it out."
Ava nodded but didn't respond. Clara's words were meant to comfort, but Ava couldn't shake the unease gnawing at her. What if everything didn't work out? What if this final year wasn't just the end of college, but the end of everything she'd come to rely on—her friendship with Clara, her sense of purpose, her identity?
The student center came into view, a large banner hanging above the doors that read, "Career Fair 2024: Your Future Awaits!" Ava rolled her eyes at the cheesy slogan, but Clara gave her a grin.
"See? Your future awaits," Clara said, linking her arm with Ava's as they walked through the doors together.
Inside, the room was buzzing with energy. Tables lined the walls, each representing a different company or organization, recruiters standing behind them with eager smiles. Students milled about, clutching résumés and nervously adjusting their blazers.
Clara immediately made a beeline for a table that was giving out free water bottles, leaving Ava standing awkwardly near the entrance. She glanced around, feeling a wave of nervousness wash over her. This wasn't just a fair—it was the next step toward something bigger. Something unknown.
Clara returned a moment later, holding two water bottles triumphantly. "Look what I snagged for us. Free hydration, baby."
Ava laughed, taking the bottle. "Thanks."
"No problem. Now, let's see which one of these booths has the least intimidating recruiter. We've got to start somewhere."
As they began to weave through the tables, Ava felt a little of the tension melt away. Maybe Clara was right. Maybe they would figure it out, just like they always had.
And even if they didn't have all the answers yet, at least they had each other—for now.
