Chapter Five

"We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls." -Anais Nin

-----

After driving another four hours, the gas light comes on once again. An annoying beep breaks the silence in the car. I bite my lower lip, glancing over at the sleeping Everett.

What if he stole my car? He could wake up while I'm inside and steal my car. And what if he called the cops and told them that I ran away, or even told them I kidnapped him? Or-

I shake my head along with my hands and sigh. Well, it's not on empty yet... I keep driving as the needle get dangerously close to the 'E'. Groaning, I take the nearest exit and pull into the parking lot of a very upscale gas station. Jumping out of the driver's seat, I run inside, quickly giving the cashier a twenty dollar bill. "Pump 2!" I call as I jog back to the truck.

As soon as I see Everett still asleep in the passenger side, I slow down and breathe a sigh of relief. My pace switches to a steady walk and I stop at the pump. After filling the gas tank, I jump back into the truck and get back on the interstate.

About ten minutes of driving pass before Everett wakes up. Rubbing his eyes, he sits up and smiles at me. "Hey. What did I miss?"

I shrug nonchalantly. "I just got gas, nothing big. So... where exactly am I supposed to drop you off?"

He laughs nervously as he runs a hand over the back of his neck. "That's the funny part."

     "Everett?"

"I don't really have a destination, to be honest," He talks quickly. "I just needed a ride to go somewhere other than home."

I roll my eyes, shaking my head. "My plan is to drive far out and then just turn around."

"That's perfect," Everett grins and visibly relaxes into the seat. "You'll drop me off on the way to your town, right?"

"Oh, of course I will, Everett. Do you really think that low of me?" I fake shock, letting my mouth hang open. "How rude. I thought you trusted me!"

Everett chuckles, shaking his head. "Don't get your hopes up too high."

This is probably the shortest chapter I've ever written.

So the plan is to just publish everything I've pre-written and go ahead and get this story over with so I can focus more on other things.
