ETHAN:

It has been two weeks since I had dinner with Olivia at Dan’s place.

In the wake of that enigmatic dinner with Olivia, her words lingered like a persistent melody, playing on the edges of my thoughts.

One thing stood out the most, playing with the strings of my control. She liked being dominated— or I was simply just assuming what I wanted to believe in. She liked to be put in her place and I wanted nothing more than to show her.

I can’t control myself when I’m around her and that is concerning. I almost lost control the last time we had dinner

   And I hate losing control.

The puzzle of her relationship with Daniel remained unsolved, the pieces scattered in a complex mosaic. The days unfolded in a rhythm of work and contemplation. My mind, a curious investigator, revisited that evening, attempting to decipher the nuances of Olivia’s cryptic message.

If you ever want to talk with me, meet me somewhere else. Don’t ruin Dan’s dinner.

I was still contemplating what she meant by that.

As the sun dipped below the skyline, casting its golden hues across the city, I killed the engine of my KTM, the rumble fading away into the background noise of the bustling city. The hospital loomed ahead, its exterior illuminated by the fading daylight.

I found myself parking on the side of the parking lot, overlooking the hospital, the chaos unveiling in front of me. The emergency patients were flowing in while the ambulances parked in front of the gate, taking the patients out with the help of nurses and stretchers.

It looked like there was some kind of accident that occurred, the doctors checked the patient's condition one by one. Taking a deep breath, I swung my leg over the motorcycle and stood for a moment, the cool breeze carrying a hint of anticipation.

I stood by, my hands hovering over the lighter in my pocket. I quit smoking ages ago but I still had the habit of flicking the lighter when thinking.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the cityscape as I reflected on the peculiarities of Dan's recent behavior.

His usual meticulousness, especially when it came to enjoying a quiet dinner, had been replaced by an abrupt departure for a case study. It didn't add up — he was the kind to shut his phone off during meals to avoid interruptions. Hell, he was the kind who had missed multiple of his flights just because the food at the airport was too good to be missed.

The notion of him leaving for a case study, something that could have been easily handled by asking a colleague to forward the necessary files later, felt absurd. As I mulled over this departure from his typical routine, I couldn’t help but ponder the depth of the tension that seemed to underpin his relationship with Olivia.

Their interactions had always carried a weight, a tension that lingered beneath the surface. Yet, the recent events had me questioning the true extent of the strain between them.

Siblings fight with each other, for sure. But no brother would take a jab at his sister's hard work or curse his sister to get her face off the earth just because she asked what is he doing, as he had done before.

They have always been distant but that night was more than distant. It was... furiosity that I saw in Daniel's eyes while her eyes were filled with yearning.

The unanswered questions echoed in my mind, urging me to delve deeper into the complexities of their connection. It was a puzzle. And the missing pieces gnawed at the edges of my understanding, leaving me intrigued and slightly unsettled.
