The autumn air clung to my skin, thick with the scent of damp leaves that stuck to the old brick buildings of St. Augustine University's recruitment center. I stood at the entrance, my heart pounding like it was trying to remind me why I was here. I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear and tugged at the oversized hoodie swallowing me up. It felt like armor. I couldn't wait to be out of Rockafeller City, away from the noise, the grime, the constant hum of survival. The clang of the subway and the shouts from vendors were all I knew. My parents had given everything to that laundromat, their hands raw from scrubbing out other people's messes, folding clothes for folks who didn't even think twice about them. I couldn't live like that. I wouldn't.

This scholarship-this was it. My ticket out.

I stepped into the building, nerves twisting inside me. Excitement. Fear. Both fighting for space. A group of students stood nearby, their voices confident, cutting through the air like it was theirs to command.
