Brigitte waits in History class. She scans the crowded classroom while Mr. Williamson babbles about the Industrial revolution, her head resting on her interlinked hands. She hates this class, and this teacher. Even though she's thoroughly uninterested, she takes written notes out of habit. School comes easy to her, it always has. Just as she thinks she's had enough and is ready to make up an excuse to leave, there's a tap on her shoulder. Its Cameron Levinson, one of the very few 'Jocks' in Bailey Downs. They've gone to school together since they can remember but never really talked; You're not supposed to when your as different as they are, Cameron being a university-bound football player and Brigitte being a social outcast.
"Brigitte, right?" he asks in a low whisper, leaning forward over the end of his desk. He knows who Brigitte is, of course he does. There's less than 150 people in their school so how could he not? Brigitte knows this question is for show, incase anyone else is listening. He's saying 'Your Brigitte, that weird girl I totally don't talk to because we're on different social standings.' She hates that this is how things go but she's aware that there's no other way. It's the social gymnastics of high school.
Brigitte turns and gives a blank expression. she hasn't talked to this boy since 7th grade so what does he want with her?
Cameron's got long golden hair hair like a sunflower, cut just above his shoulders. His face is lean and he's got dark eyebrows that don't match his messy hair. He's happy looking, unlike everyone else in Bailey Downs. He's got future and a childish glow about him.He smiles at her unenthusiasm, and his teeth are pure white like snow. "Yeah, I haven't really been taking notes so do you think you could come with me to the library later.. so i can copy some down?"
This is a tease, Brigitte thinks.
Cameron Levinson is isn't good at school. He's retaking history for the third time in the row and is actually a senior, but she still thinks he's joking. The thing is, there's not one of his footballer friends around to laugh at it. It wouldn't make sense.
She knows she should reject him but what's surprising is that she doesn't want to. Even if it's a joke she wants to go to that library. Maybe just to see, but also because because people have suddenly started to fascinate her. Not just men, but people in general, when they never did before. She's got this urge to be around them, make friends and even be around her parents. It makes her sick.
Brigitte doesn't think this ever happened to Ginger and that's confusing.
"You know what. It's fine." He scoffs, but not in a rude way, almost to making fun of his own stupidity.
"No. I'll come." She says quickly and a bit too exited. Brigitte regrets it and she knows it sound desperate but Cameron doesn't call it out. Instead, he smiles again. "Thanks."
The bell abruptly rings and it burns Brigitte's ears. She winces like a vampire and Cameron gets up from his seat. "You've got a free after lunch, right?"
Brigitte nods, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear trying to recover from that reaction.
"See you then." he walks out of class like its nothing.Brigitte scratches her head trying to fathom what just happened. How does Cameron Levinson know she has a free third period? Why did he ask her out of all the other girls in that class? Its weird. It makes her oddly uncomfortable knowing she's being seen, but it also pleases something deep inside her. She knows its the beast that yearns for attention, and maybe it being with her calls in other people. She doesn't know why else Cameron would be remotely interested by her. Brigitte hates feeling this exposed.
She packs her bag and leaves in the direction of the changing rooms.Cameron waits in the library after lunch break eating a green salad. It's lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and a bunch of other vegetables his mom threw together. He eats them after lunch break because he and his friends never actually use lunch to eat. Instead, they throw a football around at the end of the grass field like a bunch of retards.
Cameron doesn't really want to. He'd rather eat, talk about girls, or school, or anything else, but the captain of the team and his best friend Keaton Hillary won't let him. He says food can wait and football can't.
