Edward's POV
We were having dinner—Mom, Dad, and I—when my phone rang. It was Dan. I excused myself and stepped aside to answer.
"Hello?"
"Edward, Amelia was attacked and got shot. I'm heading to the hospital now."
My heart stopped. "What? Shot? Which hospital are you going to? I'll head there too."
"I'll send the address."
"Yeah... okay." I hung up, my hand trembling.
Mom and Dad were both staring at me, their faces a mirror of concern.
"Who was shot?" Dad asked, his voice heavy with worry.
"It's Amelia. She was attacked and shot," I managed, my voice cracking slightly.
"Is she alive?" Mom asked, her voice shaking in disbelief.
"Yeah, for now. They're taking her to the hospital."
"I'll come with you," Dad said, standing up.
"No, Mom needs you. I'll update you both when I get there."
"It's okay, Edward, I can come too," Mom insisted, her hand on mine, her eyes filled with worry.
"No, Mom. Tomorrow is a big day. We all need to be prepared. At least one of us should be well-rested." She nodded, tears in her eyes, and hugged me tightly. She knew how much Amelia meant to me.
With a heavy heart, I left and drove to the hospital, my mind racing with fear.
Dan was pacing outside the operating room when I arrived. His face was pale and tense.
"Where is she?" I asked, approaching him.
"She's in surgery right now," Dan replied, his voice heavy with worry. "They're trying to get the bullet out."
I rubbed my face, trying to process everything. "What exactly happened, Dan? Why was she shot?"
Dan sighed, looking even more worried. "Edward, me and Amelia believe that the murderer isn't Mr. Anderson. She's been getting too close to the truth, and maybe whoever killed Williams sees her as a threat. They want her out of the way."
"So you think this is all connected to Williams' case?" I asked, my mind spinning.
Dan nodded. "Yes. Edward, think about it. Amelia doesn't have any enemies—at least none that would try to kill her. Whoever did this is trying to cover their tracks."
I shook my head, still trying to make sense of it all. "I don't know, Dan. This feels like what happened to my brother, and I still don't know why that happened either. I'm tired of not knowing why these things happen."
Dan placed a hand on my shoulder. "Right now, let's focus on Amelia. Let's just hope and pray she pulls through."
I nodded, unable to find words. My heart ached with fear and helplessness. I couldn't lose her—not Amelia.
After what felt like an eternity, the doctor finally came out of the operating room.
"How is she?" I asked, stepping forward, my voice tight with emotion.
The doctor looked at us with a calm expression. "She's out of danger, but she's still unconscious. We'll need to wait until she wakes up."
I let out a breath I didn't even know I was holding. Relief washed over me, but the fear hadn't fully gone away.
"Thank you, doctor," Dan said, his voice full of gratitude.
"Can we see her?" I asked, desperate to be near her, to make sure she was really okay.
