You hadn't noticed him at first.
Naruto Uzumaki had always been loud, boisterous, and a little too energetic for your liking. You preferred the quietness of the library or the peaceful corners of the training grounds, away from the chaos of daily village life. But there was something strange about him now, something different.
It began the day after your team returned from a C-rank mission in the Land of Rain. The mission had been routine, nothing unusual except for the cold chill that prickled at the back of your neck as if someone had been watching you the entire time. It was odd, but you shrugged it off. Perhaps your nerves were still on edge from the intensity of the battle. But that feeling didn't go away when you returned to Konoha.
That's when you first saw him. Naruto.
It wasn’t in the crowded marketplace or the busy training grounds it was in the shadows, between buildings. You caught his piercing blue eyes staring at you from the edge of the alleyway as you walked home one night. Your heart skipped a beat, but you shook your head, dismissing it as nothing. Maybe he was just passing by, or maybe he was on another one of his missions.
But it happened again.
And again.
It was always the same as those deep blue eyes following you wherever you went. A flicker in the darkness, just out of sight. Yet whenever you tried to approach him, he disappeared, leaving you with a gnawing sensation in the pit of your stomach.
What was he doing? Why was he following you?
The unsettling feeling kept you on edge. You told yourself that Naruto was harmless. This was Naruto Uzumaki, after all the loud, friendly prankster who'd do anything to protect his friends. He wouldn’t hurt a fly. And yet, something in his gaze had changed. It wasn’t the boyish mischief you were used to seeing.
It was darker. More intense.
One evening, just after sunset, you decided to confront him. You couldn’t take it anymore the feeling of being hunted. As you walked down the narrow path leading to your apartment, you felt it again that familiar tingle of being watched. Your heart raced, but this time, you were prepared.
You spun around suddenly, your kunai in hand. “Naruto!” you called out, your voice sharp.
For a moment, there was nothing. Just the cool breeze and the dimming light. But then, he stepped forward from the shadows, a crooked smile tugging at his lips. His usually bright blue eyes were darker than you’d ever seen them.
“Why… why are you following me?” you demanded, your voice trembling despite your efforts to sound strong.
Naruto tilted his head, his smile never faltering. “Following you?” he echoed, as if the idea was absurd. “I’m not following you, (Y/N). I’m… watching over you.”
You frowned, not lowering your weapon. “Watching over me? Why?”
He took a step closer, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. “Because,” he whispered, his voice soft and unnervingly calm, “I don’t want anything to happen to you. I care about you.”
The words sent a shiver down your spine, but not in the way they should have. There was something wrong here. You knew Naruto cared about his friends, but this felt different. There was an edge to his words, a possessiveness that made your skin crawl.
You swallowed, trying to keep your voice steady. “I don’t need you to watch over me, Naruto. I can take care of myself.”
His smile faltered for a brief second, and his eyes darkened even further. “You don’t get it, do you?” he murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You can’t take care of yourself not like I can. Not like I will.”
