CHAPTER 29
┉┈◈◉◈┈┉
POV: Satoru Gojo
Satoru Gojo was never much of a sleeper, but that night was proving to be a different kind of hell.
They had just returned to Tokyo Jujutsu High that afternoon, dragging themselves through the front gates like the world's worst field trip had finally come to an end. As if three days of abusing his Six Eyes wasn't enough, they hadn't even been back a full hour before Ijichi reminded them that Yaga wanted to see them first thing in the morning.
Great. A scolding to look forward to.
But on top of all that, Suzue had gone and "adopted" Hibiki. Satoru still couldn't quite believe it. Hibiki, of all people, had become their newest... assistant. In theory. In practice, she was a walking disaster. Satoru had tried to put his foot down—Hibiki's cursed technique was about as useful as a paper umbrella in a hurricane, and her hyperactive energy was enough to wear down even the most patient of people. And let's face it, patience was not one of Satoru's virtues.
But how could he say no to Suzue?
Satoru was many things: arrogant, cocky, a certified pain in the ass—but when Suzue asked for something, he caved. Every. Single. Time.
He'd been utterly powerless, forced to nod along like the sucker he was. "Pathetic," he had thought as she sweetly asked if Hibiki could help with Ijichi's administrative tasks. Of all the things. Ijichi had looked like a deer caught in headlights after just five minutes of being around Hibiki, her endless questions, and her uncanny ability to generate chaos. The poor man was already on the verge of a breakdown, and Satoru figured it wouldn't be long before Ijichi begged Yaga to reassign her—or quit altogether.
And now, with Hibiki likely causing Ijichi to reconsider his entire life's purpose, Yaga's impending lecture looming over his head, plus the fact he'd been abusing his Six Eyes to a degree that left his head pounding, Satoru had every reason to be dead asleep.
But, of course, that was too much to ask.
A faint creak came from the floor above him. Suzue's room was directly above his, and the soft sound of her pacing had already pulled him from the brink of sleep. It wasn't the first time he'd heard it, either.
He sighed, rolling over and pulling the pillow over his face in a futile attempt to block out the noise. But then there was another sound—soft, almost imperceptible, but enough for him to know she was still awake.
«Come on, Suzue...» he muttered under his breath, lifting the pillow just enough to stare at the ceiling. They'd had a long couple of days, and if anyone deserved some rest, it was her. After all, Suzue had dealt with the cursed fog, a fight with a special-grade curse mimicking him, and her near-death experience, she needed it. Hell, he needed it too.
