Softkit looked at the almost identical gray kits.  "But, Leafkit!", she wailed to the one with yellow eyes, and a darker gray pelt. "I'm not that little! Please can I play with you and Grasskit?"

Leafkit glared at Softkit. "You're two moons old, and you still look just the same as you did when you first opened your eyes!"

"Do not!!", retorted Softkit. "I'm this big!", she said, stretching herself out on the ground.

The older kits took their chances and kicked pebbles and dust onto Softkit. "Hey! What was that for?"

Now Willowleaf is gonna be mad! She has to clean me off!

She was about to chase Grasskit, the one with amber eyes and a lighter gray pelt, when Featherkit and Shinekit tumbled out of the nursery. "Whoa, Softkit!" Exclaimed Featherkit. "How did you get so dirty?"

"Grasskit and Leafkit." Softkit replied through gritted teeth.

"Let's get them!" yowled Shinekit, and the three kits ran in all different directions.

"The dawn patrol is back!"

Softkit jumped awake. She scampered out of the nursery and saw her father, Stormclaw, dropping a bird and a rabbit on the fresh-kill pile. She tumbled back into the nursery. "Willowleaf!", she called. "Can I eat a mouse?"

Willowleaf looked up. "You can share one with Shinekit and Featherkit,"

Shinekit jumped to his paws. "Yay! Fresh-kill!" he squealed.
