As Lily sits in the back of the truck, she gazes out over the landscape, mesmerized by the view. The truck rattles along the winding path, and ahead of her, the scenery unfolds into a breathtaking panorama. A river winds its way gently through the valley below, its azure waters reflecting the soft light of the sky. It snakes between the hills and the fields, a ribbon of life cutting through the green tapestry of the land. The mountains rise like sentinels on either side of the valley, their rocky peaks softened by the lush greenery that covers their slopes.
The air is fresh, filled with the scent of wet earth from the rain that had passed. In the distance, the horizon is marked by shimmering patches of water and stretches of far-off mountains that fade into a misty blue.Lily leans back slightly, letting this very moment wash over her.
But she realises, she could use this time to write the letter.Grabbing her pen and the paper, now words flow automatically from her mind, the way river moved, the quiet strength of the hills, the gentle breeze. The wind played with her, lifting it gently into the air like soft threads of silk. The bumpy ride makes her handwriting uneven, but she doesn't let it stop her-every word feels urgent, every sentence a connection to Owen.Noticing her scribbling in the back of the truck, the old man glances at her through the rearview mirror.
His voice, rough from years of weathering the elements, breaks the silence. "You writing something important there?"
Lily pauses for a moment, looking up from her letter. "It's for someone I care about. He's out there... in the frontline. I'm trying to finish it so I can give it to him".The old man nods, steering the truck along the uneven road. "I see. Been through a lot, haven't you? What brings you out this far?".Lily hesitates, but decides to open up. She explains everything-her journey, the broken bicycle, the bear, Samuel's help, and how she's trying to get to the harbor to send this letter to Owen, who's been away fighting in the war. Her voice trembles at times, but the more she speaks, the lighter she feels.
The old man listens quietly, never interrupting. His eyes remain on the road, but she can tell he's absorbing every word. When she finishes, he gives a slight nod. "It takes courage, what you're doing", he says softly. "I've seen a lot in my time, and it's always those letters... they're what keep people going".
"You know", he began, his voice carrying a gentle nostalgia, "letters... they played a big part in how I ended up marrying my wife".Lily's interest was piqued immediately. She glanced up from her letter, curiosity filling her gaze. "Really? How did that happen?"
The old man smiled, his weathered face softening with the memory. "We met at one of the festivals between our towns. It was a yearly event, bringing people together from both places. I remember the first time I saw her, laughing with her friends, and I knew I had to talk to her. That festival became the start of something special between us".
Lily's smile grew, imagining the scene as she leaned in. "And then?""After the festival, we started writing letters to each other. Our towns were located a little far away from each other and with our busy lives, it wasn't always easy to meet up", he said, the memories clearly alive in his mind. "So we wrote, almost every week. That's how we got to know each other better.
Those letters were everything-my way of sharing my thoughts, my hopes, and eventually my love for her".He glanced over at Lily for a moment before continuing. "It wasn't until after we got married and settled here, on this land, that I started working the fields.Whenever it took so long, she would wait for me. She did stand by the road at the end of a long day, knowing when I'd come back from the fields, always watching, always waiting".
