The next few days waltzed by quickly. Sam accompanied me to the city multiple times as my dad prepared to get the soil ready for the next growing season. Under the circumstances, he pleaded that I use the leash on him, which I agreed to as long as it wasn't too tight.
He didn't want to attract any more unwanted attention now that he knew I was a wolf, and a stronger one at that.
I, unfortunately, couldn't seem to gather that as a fact and took it not so well. Every time he mentioned not to look at the other wolves around us, I did so dutifully, but every instinct made me want to.
School was just about to start up again now that winter was approaching and I looked forward to it much more than I did usually.
I'd get a break from the whole wolf thing of course and be back with my friends but also, I'd be taking Sam with me.
Dad had agreed to enrolling Sam into school, which for most wolves, was a luxury. But, per the rules, he would only have the classes I took and would have to stay in his human form. Since he was mine, he'd be given our last name and must accompany me everywhere.
But he didn't seem at all frightened about it. Moreso, enthusiastic about living a normal human life. But of course, every student and teacher would know of his origins and would not go easy on him.
Sam had told me what a little about his life before he had met me.
"My parents were leaders and I, their heir. I was supposed to have taken my father's spot as Alpha once I had underwent the Trials. And, once I had found a mate, we would sire an heir and let the legacy continue. But then there was a raid on our pack house. They didn't spare anyone; took them all away. My father was sent to a clinic to be tested for his Alpha traits and my mother went with him. I don't know what happened to them but me and my brother were sent to the shop to be sold away."
I didn't have anything to say about it. Knowing Sam had had a good life before made me wonder what living as a real werewolf would be like. If they hadn't been discovered, would Sam have grown up to his lineage?
A part of me wanted to give him his freedom but with the poachers that roamed the woods looking for any sign of more werewolves to trap, there was no way I could.
Even with the poachers, I could still sense the wolves we had fought before lurking around. They never left the woods but I could feel their presence, like a lingering smell that had a threat with every whiff.
"We should kill them," Sam had said one day while we were out shopping for some school clothes. Mom had given Sam the spare room and had started to treat him like family. Dad was a little hesitant after my attack but seemed to grow fond of him like a son and had encouraged me to find a way to treat him like a human.
"Why?" I asked, watching Sam sniff through each clothing and use his tail to point out which one he liked.
Sam had looked at me, a subtle fear in his gaze. "I know you feel them. I don't like their presence here. It would be best to get rid of them." I chuckled quietly and he looked at me, confused. "It would be really suspicious if someone found their bodies and claw marks on them. With the tech we have today, it would be easy to find out there was not one wolf there, but two. So we couldn't say you were the only one who attacked them. They'd get suspicious and try to find out what happened."
Sam went quiet but I could feel him thinking about it. "Nothing we can do about them right now. For now, let's just get ready for school. I know you're excited," I smirked his way and he shot me a wolf's version of a frown in which I responded with a small giggle.
We managed to get out of there easily with no problems and when we got home, dad was waiting for us.
"You get everything ya' need there alright?" He asked, sitting at the table with a cigar in his mouth. I held up the two bags of clothing and smiled, "Yup, nothing too bit but enough he'll fit in just enough." I looked down at him but he was staring at my dad.
"Ah, that's good. Well, if there's anything you both need to talk about, I am always here to listen." He took a puff and watched the smoke come out. Sam spared me a glance, wondering what was up but I decided it was nothing. He was probably referring to how Sam would be treated at school.
"Come on, let's go get these put away," I began, motioning for Sam to lead.
When we got to his room, I stood outside his door so he could shift and change into clothes. The sound of his bones rearranging still made me queasy but I managed to tune it out as I smelled the air waft through the door. He had left it slightly opened and it took me a lot of self-discipline not to look through and peek.
"You can come in now," his voice startled me from my intrusive thoughts, but it didn't help that it sounded...different. When I opened the door, I saw him facing away from me. He was wearing sweatpants and his naked back was exposed to me, the scars on them looked painful, and it hurt to know I couldn't do anything to help.
"You need to do better about blocking your thoughts from me. It's a distraction sometimes," I jumped a little, startled by how low his voice had gotten.
"I'm sorry, I haven't really...adjusted to this whole wolf thing yet." I gulped, knowing well he must've heard everything.
"Are you aware of your senses yet?" He turned to me and I had to look away from the hard muscles in his chest.
"What do you mean," I mumbled, looking at the lamp beside his bed.
"Have you smelled me? Truly smelled me?" His voice had gotten lower and more dangerous, and I could feel something in my stomach fluttering like crazy.
What is happening?
"No," I answered, trying hard to resist locking eyes with him.
His footsteps started then, slow but increasing until he was standing just close enough I could detect something. But it felt like I wasn't the only one.
The wolf in me stirred as if awoken from sleep and it became just a little frightening not knowing what was going on.
"Would you like to?"
It was too late though, the breeze from his footsteps had reached my nose. My wolf sniffed desperately and I felt stir between us.
Sam must've noticed my sniffing and took a bigger step closer, until his scent overwhelmed me.
The wolf in me howled, stirring up emotions that made my heart quicken with what felt like adrenaline. My body began to react, desire wafting off of me in waves. I finally reached his eyes which had turned a hard silver. They were glowing as he seemed to have sniffed as well. His nostrils flared and I could smell the desire coming off him as well.
Not a second after, I growled lowly, my senses coming to life as the sweet smell of vanilla overwhelmed my senses.
"Mate."
