The next morning, Fearin woke early, his mind still racing from the events of the previous day. He had always prided himself on maintaining control, but the way Kira had fallen into the pool and the fear he felt as he dove in after her had rattled him more than he cared to admit.
After getting dressed, he found himself drawn to her room. He hesitated outside her door, wondering if it was too intrusive to check on her while she slept. But the thought of her vulnerable and alone made his heart race in a way he didn't want to acknowledge. He needed to know she was okay.
With a deep breath, he opened the door just a crack, peering inside. The morning light filtered in through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room. There she was, lying peacefully on the bed, her hair splayed out across the pillow, wet strands still glistening. She looked so innocent in her sleep.
Kira’s face was relaxed, and for a moment, he allowed himself to admire her features. Her lashes fanned out against her cheeks, and her lips were slightly parted as she breathed softly. She seemed so carefree, and he couldn’t help but feel a pang of something—something he couldn’t quite define.
His gaze drifted to the bracelet on her wrist, the one his mother had given her. It sparkled even in the dim light, a reminder of the ties that bound them. He frowned, feeling the weight of expectation that came with their arranged marriage. Kira was more than just a pawn in a corporate game; she was a real person with hopes and dreams, even if he struggled to understand them.
He took a step closer, carefully crossing the room to make sure he didn’t wake her. As he approached, he noticed the way she hugged the blanket closer to her body, seeking warmth. The sight tugged at his heart.
“Why am I even here?” he muttered to himself, frustrated by the vulnerability creeping in. He had always been the one in control, never allowing himself to feel too much. Yet, here he was, drawn to a woman who was supposed to be just a part of his duty.
Fearin ran a hand through his hair, trying to shake off the feeling. He had a reputation to uphold; he couldn’t afford to be distracted. But as he watched her sleep, he felt an unfamiliar urge to protect her, to ensure she was safe from the chaos that often surrounded their lives.
Suddenly, she stirred, her eyes fluttering open. Fearin quickly straightened, trying to mask his emotions behind his usual cool demeanor.
“Good morning,” he said, his voice steady.
Kira blinked at him, confusion passing over her face before it morphed into a soft smile. “Good morning,” she replied, her voice still thick with sleep.
“I wanted to check on you,” he said, his tone surprisingly gentle. “After yesterday…”
“I’m okay,” she interrupted, sitting up and wrapping the blanket around her shoulders. “Just a little embarrassed.”
“You shouldn’t be,” he said, his brows furrowing. “Accidents happen. Just try to be more careful in the future.”
She nodded, but there was a hint of disappointment in her eyes. He could tell she wanted more from him—more kindness, more understanding. But that was dangerous territory for him. Emotions were complicated, and he had no interest in letting anyone close enough to hurt him.
“Are you really okay?” he pressed, his voice softer now.
“Yes, I promise,” she assured him. “Thanks for checking on me.”
As he turned to leave, he felt a strange sense of longing in his chest. Kira was more than just a distraction; she was a mystery he found himself wanting to unravel. But he couldn’t afford to lose himself in her world. He had to remain focused on the bigger picture.
