Chapter 13
As Yn and Kunikida arrived at the venue, they approached the entrance where a grand banner announced the evening's gala. Elegant decorations covered the doorway, and the soft glow of chandeliers spilled warmth over the bustling crowd.
"Let's get signed in," Kunikida said, gesturing toward the registration table where a host was checking names with an annoyed look. As they approached, the attendant barely glanced up from her clipboard. "Names?" she demanded, her tone was flat.
Yn swallowed hard, feeling a pang of irritation at the woman's demeanor. "Yn," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
The attendant scribbled something without a word, handing over a shiny name tag that felt more like a label than a welcome. Kunikida stepped up next, and the attendant barely acknowledged him either, simply muttering something as she wrote.
"Great service," Kunikida muttered under his breath, rolling his eyes as they walked away.
Let's focus on the mission," Kunikida said, his expression turning serious again. "Keep your eyes peeled for our targets, We're not here to socialize."
They walked by a large group of guests by the bar, Yn said "Are any of them on our list?" He quickly scanned the crowd and said "Yes, the man in the blue suit, we need to keep a close eye on him"
Kunikida picked a table close to the group, He put his notebook on the table and said "Okay this is a good seat, we can see everything"
Just then, the lights dimmed slightly, and a spotlight illuminated the stage at the front of the hall. A host stepped up to welcome everyone. He then said "And now a word from our president"
The crowd started to cheer as he stepped onto the stage, this was the moment Kunikida waited for, As he began to speak Kunikida noticed that the man in the blue suit moved to the front of the room with a different group of people.
"Stay focused," Kunikida murmured, nudging her. "We can't afford to get distracted. Look for anything unusual in the crowd."
Yn nodded, her gaze shifting from the stage to the audience. As she scanned the faces, she noticed a few guests whispering amongst themselves, casting glances toward the stage. Her instincts tingled—something about their demeanor felt off.
Just then, the lights flickered, and the crowd fell silent, creating an air of tension. Kunikida's eyes narrowed. "This isn't right," he whispered. "We need to be ready for anything."I've been losing interest in this book. I need to end it soon
