Lila POV:
Lila sat on the edge of Emily's couch, her fingers anxiously fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve. Emily, always perceptive, noticed Lila's distraction immediately, though she didn't push her for details. Yet. They had met up for what was supposed to be a casual coffee date, but Lila's heart was far from calm, and her mind was spinning out of control."I don't even know why I'm considering going," Lila muttered, her voice barely audible as she stared down at her lap. The invitation to Zane and Alexandria's engagement party sat crumpled in her bag, like a weight pulling her deeper into this tangled web of emotions.
Emily frowned, sitting across from her friend, her brow furrowing with concern. "Lila, why would you even think about going to that engagement party? After everything that's happened between you and Zane?" She shook her head, incredulous. "It just sounds like torture."
Lila exhaled slowly, her mind flashing back to the moment she met Alexandria—the pristine, beautiful fiancée of Zane Hunter. The woman Zane was supposed to marry. The woman Lila had never even known existed until that fateful introduction at the café, when she stood awkwardly beside Ryan, and Zane stood across from them with her.
Alexandria, perfect in every way, had smiled at Lila like it was all part of some elaborate social game. Like Lila was just another pawn to be maneuvered. But that wasn't the worst part. No, the worst part had been Zane's eyes on her—how he couldn't stop looking at her even as his fiancée introduced herself. That had been the hardest blow of all, knowing there was something so raw, so unresolved between them while he was bound to another woman.
But Lila hadn't run. Not this time. She had stood her ground and politely nodded, making small talk while Ryan had smiled like everything was fine. Only it wasn't. Zane had been too close, his presence almost unbearable, and the tension between them had buzzed like electricity. She could still feel the weight of his gaze as she replayed the scene in her mind.
"I know," Lila said, finally looking up at Emily. "I know it's insane, but..." She trailed off, uncertain how to explain the knot of emotions twisting inside her.
"But what?" Emily pressed, her tone softer now, understanding the delicate balance her friend was walking.
Lila's lips parted, but the words caught in her throat. How could she even begin to explain what had happened between her and Zane? The rain-soaked night. The fiery kiss they had shared. His hands on her skin, the way he had needed her in that moment—only for him to pull away just as fiercely. He had tried to act as though he was in control, that his world was unshakable, but Lila had seen the cracks. She had felt the rawness, the vulnerability he tried to hide.
"He's engaged," Lila finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But when I'm around him, it feels like nothing else matters."
Emily's eyes softened with concern. "Lila..." she began, choosing her words carefully. "I get it. Believe me, I've seen you overthink relationships before, but this? This is different. You're playing with fire, and I'm worried you're going to get burned."
Lila rubbed her hands together, trying to warm the cold that had settled in her bones. Emily was right. She knew it. But something about Zane was pulling her in deeper than she had ever imagined. The rational part of her screamed that she should stay away, that she should forget the kiss, forget the tension, forget the unspoken words between them.
But then she thought of Ryan. She thought of his proposal. And as much as she tried to focus on the idea of building a future with him, her mind kept circling back to Zane.
"Ryan proposed," Lila blurted out, the words hanging in the air like a grenade about to go off.
Emily's eyes widened in shock. "Wait—what? When? You didn't mention that!"
"I didn't know how to bring it up," Lila admitted, her voice shaking. "I don't know how I feel about it. It's just... everything is happening so fast."
Emily sat back, digesting this new information. "And how do you feel about it? About Ryan? Do you even want to marry him?"
Lila stared at her friend for a long moment, the question ringing in her ears. Did she want to marry Ryan? They had been together for so long, and she had convinced herself that it was the natural next step. But when she thought about their future together, the same spark that had ignited her with Zane was absent. With Ryan, it was comfort, stability—predictable. With Zane, it was chaos, fire, and a storm of emotions she couldn't control.
"I don't know," Lila confessed, her voice barely a whisper.
Emily sighed, leaning forward. "Lila, you don't have to make any decisions right now. But you need to figure out what you really want. Going to that engagement party? It's like walking into a battlefield without knowing who your allies are."
Lila knew she was right. Yet, the thought of seeing Zane again, of confronting those unresolved feelings, was too tempting to ignore.
"I think I need to go," Lila said, her voice more certain now. "I need to see it with my own eyes. I need to understand what's happening between us."
Emily frowned but nodded. "If that's what you need, then fine. But, Lila—just be careful. Zane's not exactly a simple guy. And you're already in too deep."
Lila nodded, her heart heavy with the weight of what was to come. She wasn't naïve. She knew that walking into Zane and Alexandria's engagement party meant stepping into a world of lies, secrets, and heartache. But she couldn't stop herself.
The storm between her and Zane was only growing, and she knew, deep down, that it was only a matter of time before it consumed them both.
As Lila left Emily's apartment that evening, her decision made, the rain had stopped, but the tension inside her only grew. She had no idea what awaited her at the party, but one thing was certain—there was no turning back now.
