The letter felt heavy in your hand, filled with words you had never said out loud, emotions you had buried deep for months. Today, you were finally going to give it to him—Jungwon. You’d spent countless nights thinking about how to confess your feelings, and this letter was your only chance to tell him everything. But just as you stepped into the garden, you froze in place.
There he was, smiling brightly, his hand intertwined with hers. She was that girl—always so loud, so attention-seeking. She had everyone wrapped around her finger, always making everything about herself. And now she had him too. You watched as she leaned into him, her eyes twinkling, laughing at something he said. Jungwon’s smile, so soft, so genuine, was directed entirely at her.
Your heart shattered. Everything you had planned to say in the letter felt pointless now. You clenched the letter in your trembling hands, feeling the tears welling up in your eyes. You couldn’t stay there, not a second longer. Without a word, without a sound, you turned and ran.
The tears fell freely as you fled, the letter still gripped tightly in your fist, now crumpled and forgotten. It was over before it had even begun.
---
From that day on, you withdrew from everyone. You became colder, more distant than ever. Even Sunghoon noticed the difference in you, though he didn’t say much. Your brother had always been protective, but he understood when to give you space. He didn’t pry, but the concern in his eyes said enough.
Jungwon, however, was clueless. He noticed your change in behavior but had no idea why. Whenever he tried to talk to you, you brushed him off, your words short and dismissive.
"Are you mad at me?" he asked one afternoon when he finally cornered you in the school hallway.
You looked up at him, your expression blank. "No," you lied, trying to move past him.
But Jungwon wasn’t giving up this time. "Then why are you avoiding me?" His voice was full of hurt, confusion laced in every word.
Your heart clenched, but you kept your face cold. "It doesn’t matter, Jungwon. Just stop."
"Stop what?" He was desperate now. "What did I do? Why are you acting like this?"
You couldn’t handle the way he looked at you, so full of concern when it was too late. "Nothing you do matters to me anymore," you said coldly, the words cutting through both of you like a knife.
Jungwon stared at you, stunned, the hurt in his eyes deepening. But you didn’t wait for a response. You walked away, leaving him standing alone, confused and broken.
---
Weeks passed, and things between you and Jungwon never went back to how they were. He stopped trying to talk to you, his once warm and friendly glances turning distant. The girl he was with that day in the garden was always by his side now, and you told yourself you didn’t care. You had built walls so high, nothing could get through them anymore.
Sunghoon tried to help, but he knew better than to push. "You know he thinks we’re dating, right?" he said one evening, leaning against the doorframe of your room.
You looked up at him, confused. "What?"
"Jungwon. He thought you and I were a thing," Sunghoon explained with a shrug, though the situation was anything but casual. "Probably why he never made a move."
Your heart sank. All this time, Jungwon had misunderstood, thinking you and Sunghoon were together. That’s why he had never noticed your feelings.
But it didn’t matter anymore. It was too late.
---
One day, while cleaning out your bag, you found the crumpled letter. It was still there, tucked away at the bottom, forgotten amidst all the pain. You unfolded it, the words staring back at you, mocking how naive you had been.
You tore the letter into pieces.
It wasn’t meant to be. You were too late, and so was he.
Jungwon had moved on with her, and you… you were left with the empty echoes of what could have been. You told yourself it was for the best. You had your walls, your coldness, and that was enough. Maybe one day, you’d forget about him entirely.
But deep down, you knew the truth.
He had taken a piece of you with him, a piece that would never return.
