Your life had always been a series of expectations that were never truly yours. From the moment you were born, your parents' love was conditional—wrapped tightly around the notion of money, success, and appearances. They were never there for you when you needed emotional support. They didn’t care about your happiness or well-being, only how you could contribute to their perfect image of the perfect family.
Through the years, your worth was measured by your grades, your career prospects, and eventually, the wealth you could bring to their already overflowing coffers. You were a pawn in their game of social status, nothing more, nothing less. You had become so used to it that you stopped even hoping for a connection beyond the materialistic world they created for you.
When they forced you into an arranged marriage with Heeseung, the cold CEO, it felt like your life was slipping even further from your control. Heeseung wasn’t cruel, not like your ex-boyfriend, but he was emotionally distant. His life revolved around meetings, business deals, and status. There was no warmth in his eyes, no affection in his words. He was there physically but emotionally absent. It was a marriage born out of obligation and wealth, a union forged not by love but by the practicalities of family pressure.
"Marry him! He's good for you... And for our business development!"
The weight of it all became too much. Your parents, cold and indifferent, pushed you into a relationship with someone who barely saw you as a person. Every day, you felt like you were losing yourself, becoming just another asset in their ever-growing empire. You felt trapped. No one asked what you wanted. No one cared.
But the worst was your past—your abusive ex-boyfriend, the one who left emotional scars that never fully healed. He had once told you that you were nothing without him, that you would always need him, and for a time, you believed him. He’d manipulated you, controlled you, making you doubt your worth and abilities. His words were like poison, slowly eroding your confidence until there was nothing left but fear.
But that was before you cut ties with him. You had finally left, escaping his grip, but the trauma he inflicted remained. The PTSD he had caused followed you into your marriage, into your life, like a shadow you couldn’t escape. You had convinced yourself that you were free of him, but freedom was a distant dream.
---
Days after your arranged marriage, you went through the motions—living in the same house as Heeseung but feeling more isolated than ever. You slept in a bed that felt empty, ate meals that were silent and cold, and went about your days pretending everything was fine. Heeseung’s cold indifference was like a constant weight on your chest, but at least he wasn’t abusive. At least he didn’t demand anything from you emotionally. He simply didn’t care.
Your parents, meanwhile, continued to pressure you, believing that your marriage to a successful CEO was the pinnacle of your life. They constantly reminded you of your duty to the family. “You should be thankful, you know,” your mother would say, her voice sharp and distant, “Heeseung is a man of power. You’ve married well.”
