"I am fine, ok!" Sam yelled at her mother,"Now leave me alone." He continued.
His mother gave him a concerned look as he slowly walked past his room towards the door.
With a rush, Sam slammed the door and locked it. He started feeling as if he was all alone with no help because he knew that there was no one would believe in his story, and maybe if he admitted the truth, people would think less of him, or the worst of all was that he feared that he was to carry the whole blame upon James' disappearance.
Later that night, Sam lay on the bed awake, staring at the at the ceiling. The house felt too cold and quiet, and every creek and groans reminded him of the forest– the way the shadow seemed to shift and whisper in the dark. As he continued to gaze at the ceiling, a memory flashed through his mind–
It was as if sam saw James tripping over the root and hears him scream for help. The memory felt so real that it tightened his chest, and he began breathing quickly.
He turned over the bed to hug his knees to his chest with efforts to push the memory out of his head, but it was useless. The guilt of betraying his friend ran into his mind.
"I am sorry..... James, I am sorry." he murmured to himself with tears wetting his face. But nothing was there to hear his confession apart from the walls of his room.
*****The next day, Sam's dad noticed something was wrong with Sam. So, during breakfast, he decided to sit near Sam so he could confront him, but sam was quiet, and not a word came from his mouth. It was when his dad decided to break the silence–
"You know James is a tough kid he'll show up. You'll see."
All of a suuden Sam pushed his plate away as he felt that the lies were no longer bearable, but he didn't know how and whom he would admit to.
"Look. I know you feel so bad for your friend, but whatever happened out there, i am sure you did your best." His dad added.
Sam froze for a moment and then snapped.
"I didn't do my best, okay? I ran and left him."
His dad was shocked from such an outburst and remained sitting in a stunned silence, and before he could add up any word, sam bolted out of the kitchen and slammed the door to his room.
