Now that I have the map all that is left is opportunity.
Blair and I go back to my room after class to wait for nightfall.
X should've been home by now. He left with a sword this morning and I haven't seen him since.
He could be in trouble or worse.
7:00pm and no sign of X.
The bad news is that he was probably taken too.
We sit around waiting for midnight.
I start to read the books I found in Dennis' room, the book about the Order of Light. The order was founded by a group of people blessed by the gods. Their mission was to protect humanity from dark beings created by a trickster god.
Dark beings that feed off souls and chaos and strife. Reading it sounds like something that would give kids nightmares.
I think back to what X told me. The possibility that these things are real sends a shiver down my spine.
Midnight finally comes and it's time to move.
I slip my dagger into my bag before leaving.
The halls are quiet and empty.
I signal Blair and we slowly tiptoe through the halls trying not to make a sound.
We get to the entrance near the back where the shelf is. The same one that Bam led me into.
Blair has the map and leads the way, I follow
I start to get flashbacks of Saturday night following Bam through the tunnels.
We reach a point where I notice the same purple flowers.
Memories start to overlapping with reality.
I get a vision back to that night.
I'm walking through the tunnel.
Blair follows.
I follow the trail of purple flowers lining the wall.
We enter a room with bars on one side like a cage.
I remember there being something begging me to move the flowers.
They said they were poison.
I started to rip the flowers from the bars.
That's when the person in the cage-
Their eyes started to glow. I remember the sinister smile.
With one hit they knocked the cell door off the hinges. I flew against the wall and just before I lost consciousness they stepped out.
It was a woman.
-It was Headmaster Gray.
The memories come back as I stand in the room with the cell with no door and purple flowers on the floor.
"We have to go." I tell Blair.
I'm not sure if she can sense the panic in my voice or she remembers too but she hurries after me.
On my way out I grab a bushel of flowers from the wall and shove them into my bag.
Something tells me they could be useful.
We make it down the tunnel, just far enough to catch our breaths when all of a sudden something brushes my foot.
I jump back and realize it's the same weasel as before. He runs in a circle before taking off down a hall.
Blair stops to check the map for which way to go when we hear someone coming.
Footsteps inside the tunnels.
We don't have time to waste.
In an act of faith I take off running after the weasel.
We head down twists and turns and end up back at the second floor. One of the tunnel opens up back down the hall from my room.
Blair and I rush out of the tunnel.
We spend the rest of the night in my room talking.
What was in the cage was something stronger than any man and dangerous.
I accidentally let it out and it took over the school calling itself Gray
Blair and I both agree we can't handle this alone but we don't have any way to reach out for help.
We have a plan. From what I can tell Mr.McKinsley and Seàmus are trustworthy. In the morning we'll find them and explain what's going on.
Morning comes and I wake up to the sound of knocks on the door.
I gently wake up Blair.
Just as she opens her eyes there's another knock.
She hurries up and runs to the bathroom.
I adjust my clothes and go to open the door.
It's Abigail.
Seeing her my body tenses up. I jump back unsure of what to expect.
"Marcellus Abbott?" she says.
I can't help but hear her voice as threatening.
She hands me a piece of paper.
"It's a shame to say goodbye."she says.
The paper are copies of a withdrawal form.
She smiles and turns to walk away.
Douglas walks in.
"Your dad is outside. Do you need any help with your bags?"Douglas asks.
I'm confused.
How and why did I get withdrawn from boarding school?
I've only been here for a week.
Before I can ask Douglas any questions Donovan appears in the doorway.
He gives me look like he's disgusted by me.
"Time to go." he says
"I need time to pack." I say.
He snarls and turns away.
"We'll be back in 10 minutes" Douglas says.
As soon as I close the door Blair comes rushing out the bathroom.
She grabs the paper from me and starts to read.
"Is this real?"she asks.
"I think so." I respond.
"But, you can't leave." she says.
I grab her.
"I don't have a choice"
We share a kiss and I start to pack. I take everything from my closet.
Blair still has my jacket to remember me.
"I'll find a way to get back her." I say.
I grab my 5 suitcases and open the door.
Douglas and Donovan are waiting in the hall.
Douglas helps me carry a couple of the bags while Donovan walks behind like he's escorting me out.
I get downstairs and the same driver that brought me here.
I put my bags in the trunk and get inside the car.
I look at Barnum one last time as we drive off.
