I HAD LANDED in the summer of 2021, thanks to this bizarre twist in time. Tomorrow was my birthday-the twentieth of August-and here I was, lying in a hospital bed in Seoul from the last six hours. But mentally, I was twenty-four. Would turning twenty tomorrow really mean anything?
In my original timeline, my twentieth birthday had been spent in college. It was my final year, and midterms loomed over me. Despite the pressure, some good friends made sure that day was memorable. But back then, I wasn't lying in a hospital bed, with a stubborn Jeon Jungkook sitting silently in the corner of my room, his gaze fixed on me like he was guarding some precious secret.
Was he already in love with me the first time we met? And if not, then why stay here, watching over me like this, when it's absolutely unnecessary?
I decided to keep quiet about why I was here or how I had fainted. I didn't fully understand it myself, and trying to explain the whole elaborate timescape nonsense from Seongjoon would only make me sound like I belonged in a mental asylum. Besides, if I was going to decipher and fix certain things in this timeline, keeping sensitive information to myself would probably work out better in the long run.
The door to my hospital room swung open, gliding shut with a gentle slam as two familiar figures rushed in, each wearing vastly different expressions. Instinctively, I tried to sit up, feeling a sudden pressure in the room, but I barely moved before I was interrupted.
"Kenzie! Sweetheart, how did this happen? Are you okay?" The familiar, concerned voice of the woman who had been by my side most of my life reached my ears. I hadn't realized just how much I missed her, especially the warmth in her eyes, brimming with worry.
"Mum..." I whispered, my voice barely audible as she sat beside me on the bed, cupping my face with gentle hands. Tears threatened to spill over as a wave of emotions hit me. I missed her that much.
For my memory, it had only been a little over two weeks since I last saw my mother, but this meeting felt like one after a million years. The last time, her face was etched with sadness and remorse; not being able to intervene in matters concerning me must have been painful for her. I knew how much she cared-more than the stern, firm, and expressionless figure standing silently behind her.
As my mother scanned my face with that familiar look of concern, my eyes drifted discreetly to my father. He was silent, as always, keeping his thoughts to himself, but something about him was different. His gaze had shifted, his usual indifference replaced by a hint of interest directed at the man standing near the sofa-Jungkook, who was now attempting to quietly leave the room to give us some privacy.
Thankfully, Jungkook didn't make the mistake of engaging my father any further; he offered a quick, respectful bow and a split-second acknowledgment before silently closing the door behind him. I knew all too well how my father reacted to any guy I so much as showed an interest in, let alone someone like Jungkook, who might be around for reasons he couldn't quite grasp.
