Kaito was a poor fisherman who one day meet his fate with Kintoru (Sama). He went sailing to capture fish for his daughter Hana (Biwaki). As he went saing he suddenly saw a woman dresed in black, unconscious. He immediately entered the witches domain and helped her up. To "thank" him she gav him a biwa as a gift. But little did he know, the biwa was cursed. He went home and played the cursed biwa, and the music cursed him and his daughter.
Kintoru took both Kaito and Hana, she cursed them and turned them into her puppets due to them using the cursed biwa she offered to Kaito as a gift for helping her.
