Chapter 1: The Normalcy
The sun rose lazily over Makati, casting a warm glow on the bustling streets filled with students rushing to school. Among them were three inseparable friends: Maloi, Colet, and Jhoanna, who navigated the crowded hallways of their high school with laughter and teasing. Their bond was palpable, each bringing their unique energy to the group.
Maloi was the steady anchor, always ready to lend a listening ear. With her calm demeanor and quick wit, she often mediated the playful banter between Jhoanna and Colet. Despite her supportive nature, she kept a secret close to her heart: her growing admiration for Colet, whose unpredictable spirit both intrigued and bewildered her.
Colet, the free spirit of the trio, moved through life with a spontaneity that made every day an adventure. Her infectious laughter filled the air as she danced through the halls, often dragging Maloi and Jhoanna into impromptu karaoke sessions in the courtyard. Yet, beneath her carefree exterior lay an unpredictable nature, leaving everyone guessing what she might do next.
Jhoanna, the emotional core of the group, was unapologetically expressive. Her heart was worn on her sleeve, especially when it came to Maloi. As they sat under a large mango tree during lunch, Jhoanna mustered the courage to confess her feelings, her voice barely above a whisper. “Maloi, I… I like you. A lot.”
Maloi felt her cheeks flush, her heart racing, but she hesitated, caught in a whirlwind of emotions. “Jhoanna, you know I care about you, but—”
Before she could finish, Colet interrupted with a mischievous grin. “What’s this? A love confession? Should I get the popcorn?” Her playful teasing was met with Jhoanna’s mock glare, but a small smile tugged at the corner of Maloi’s lips.
As laughter erupted among them, the tension dissipated, though Maloi couldn’t shake the feeling that her heart belonged to Colet. The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, and they gathered their things, unaware of the storm brewing just beyond the city limits—a zombie virus that would soon change everything.
As they walked through the bustling corridors, Jhoanna’s eyes lingered on Maloi, hoping for a sign of reciprocation. Colet, oblivious to the undercurrents of emotion, suggested a karaoke contest for the weekend. The trio laughed, their voices mingling in the air, a stark contrast to the dark reality that loomed ahead.
Little did they know, their world was about to be turned upside down.
